Guitar Weight

Lets say that I'm looking at a Tele body on the Warmoth website... and the website tells me it weighs 4 lbs - what would be the approximate weight of the whole complete guitar?

In other words - how much does everything that is not the body weighs?

Re: Guitar Weight

Depends largely on the neck. Pickups and electronics will add a bit but nowhere near as much as the body or neck.

Re: Guitar Weight

The figure of approximately four pounds is just for a finished piece of wood. The metal hardware can add considerably to this figure - a fact that can be used to advantage to improve on-strap balance.

Re: Guitar Weight

A thick finish on the neck can actually add as much weight as the tuners.

Typically the hardware + electronics + neck weighs about 3 pounds total.

Re: Guitar Weight

Well after googling this, it really varies on wood type used in the neck and body, (northern rock maple to swamp ash to Koa it just depends). But the average is about 5.5 to 7.5 lbs

Re: Guitar Weight

About 10lbs is a good weight. That way the wood is dense enough to get a good tone (my tele is close to 10 kg but sounds wonderful).
For some reason Gibson and Fender have decided that 5lbs is the new maximum a guitar should weigh so chamber sway most of the tone. If you want a light guitar get a thin-line or a semi. That way you get a light guitar with a good tone. Chambered guitars mostly sound plinky (especially the new Telecasters where the pick guard acts as a plastic sound board!)

Re: Guitar Weight

Thanks.

A 5.5 lbs solid body?

That would be chambered all Les Pauls made after 2008 are chambered as are quite a lot of Fenders. The back contour on modern Strats is much larger than on Strats from a few years ago as well. I think someone tried to sue the guitar industry over back problems and there has been panic.
