Guitar wood idea

Last night I put an A2 59/Custom hybrid into my swamp ash strat and my mahogany Warmoth VIP (specs listed below). The VIP was noticeably brighter (too much so). The strat had a nice spank from the swamp ash and maple/rosewood neck, but I missed some of the low-mids that the mahogany guitar had.

So, I was thinking of combining the best of the two into a new Warmoth project. A maple/rosewood neck (because I want more spank than bloom), a mahogany body, and...a swamp ash cap. By getting rid of the maple cap and going with swamp ash, I should get rid of the excessive brightness of the maple while adding some extra spank to the tone. The mahogany would add some warmth back in. To be cool, I'd probably go with a black korina back instead of mahogany.

So, how does this sound? Has anyone heard of such a beast? I've searched goodle and dejanews, but could find no mention of guitars that use swamp ash tops other than some Andersons that use swamp ash on alder.

Sounds cool, but keep in mind that korina is going to be brighter than mahogany and a little different tonally.

i think its a brilliant idea.

Re: Guitar wood idea

Tom Anderson have been doing similar things with alder/swamp ash strat bodies. I think it's a great idea.

Re: Guitar wood idea

You may be able to get away with just the korina, but hey, the more woods the more complex yer tone.

(ps. I would make love to korina if it were at all possible.)

Hmmmm...I was under the impression that Korina was nearly identical to mahogany, but perhaps it's not. Maybe I'll go with an all Korina body.

Anyone use a korina body with a maple neck? Isn't there someone around here with a korina strat?

Re: Guitar wood idea

I've been thinking about a guitar like this myself, because i prefer the look of swamp ash to maple.

I quess i'm not normal.

Re: Guitar wood idea

sounds like a neat project.
hey, btw, has anyone heard of/used a red cedar top on an electric guitar? (not an acoustic) i've got a ton of it, premium grade. guess where i got it? my front yard! i was thinking i could make a body for myself in my workshop. i've got all the stuff i need... just wondering about the tone.
