Last night I put an A2 59/Custom hybrid into my swamp ash strat and my mahogany Warmoth VIP (specs listed below). The VIP was noticeably brighter (too much so). The strat had a nice spank from the swamp ash and maple/rosewood neck, but I missed some of the low-mids that the mahogany guitar had.
So, I was thinking of combining the best of the two into a new Warmoth project. A maple/rosewood neck (because I want more spank than bloom), a mahogany body, and...a swamp ash cap. By getting rid of the maple cap and going with swamp ash, I should get rid of the excessive brightness of the maple while adding some extra spank to the tone. The mahogany would add some warmth back in. To be cool, I'd probably go with a black korina back instead of mahogany.
So, how does this sound? Has anyone heard of such a beast? I've searched goodle and dejanews, but could find no mention of guitars that use swamp ash tops other than some Andersons that use swamp ash on alder.
