You can use an equation to determine if 11 guage strings will give you more sustain, but it makes more sense to try them out.

Back in the day, when first developed, solid-state amplification looked the same as tube amplification.

You could get out the pencil and paper to determine whether the small or large Fender headstock makes any difference in sustain or tone, but you could also just play one of each and find out.

...so in a world of millions of guitars, amps, pedals, strings, cables, picks, etc. how do you know which ones to try to see if they sound good? That's where the generalizations help. You know "generally" what a mahogony set neck sounds like, you know "generally" what a alder/maple bolt neck sounds like, analog delay vs. digital delay, SS vs. Tube vs. Modelling amp...
