Re: ...Guitarography!!!

The only guitars that I have sold are:

A Hagstrom II (1964) needed the cash to buy my SG which I still have

A Taylor 615C. Hated it!! I replaced it with a Santa Cruz OM. Best day of my life guitar wize.

A Tacoma Archtop. I really didn't play it too much so I decided to sell it.

Everything else I have bought I still have!

Re: ...Guitarography!!!

I was on hiatus the first time this came around, so I think I'll share my list. This is the best I can do from memory; there may be a couple more I had briefly. Guitars I still have are in bold.

  1. 1999 Jackson K10 Pro: I bought it because it looked cool, which I admit is a pretty dumb reason to buy a guitar. It was neck heavy and didn't sound great, so I gave it to my bro when he started playing and later added my EMG 81/85 set from the Explorer.
  2. 1996 Gibson Explorer: This was my first nice guitar. I bought it in Feb 2000, and it was my #1 until I had to take a break from guitar due to injury in 2010. At first I loved the guitar, but just couldn't get along with the 496/500 set, and it had a few tuning issues. So of course I installed a set of Sperzels, and I also installed an EMG set since I was a huge Metallica fan back then. After playing the EMGs for about a year, I plugged it in one day and suddenly HATED them. Anything would be better, even the original crappy pickups. I swapped them back in, and one day that must've been destined Dave's Guitar got in a used JB/59 set. I bought them that day, and I've been a Seymour fan ever since though the JB/59 set didn't work out. I swapped them for Custom / Jazz which it has to this day.
  3. 199? ESP Eclipse: It played great, but I just couldn't get along with this one tonally. I tried a JB in the bridge, but even that sounded like muddy poo. This was before I joined the forum, so a 500K pot never occurred to me and I sold it after a few months.
  4. 2001 Gibson Les Paul Standard: This is the only guitar I've ever bought new. Swapped Grovers for Sperzels, installed an ABR-1 & lightweight TP, & tried a few sets up pickups. It currently needs a refret, and I'm planning to try 50s style Jimmy Page wiring with a zebra 59 set.
  5. 1977 Gibson Les Paul Custom: This was an impulse buy in the summer of 2002. It was heavy as hell and I ended up playing it less than my Standard even after installing a set of Duncans. When I needed to unload a guitar to pay rent in the fall of 2003, this one went on ebay.
  6. 1998 Guild DV6: I bought this one with my student loan change check in Sept 2002. I love it still, and every song I've ever written has been played on it at some point.
  7. 1986 Charvel Model 4: I bought it from my bro when he wanted money for something 2004-ish. It's been modded all to death, and it's my go-to around-the-house beater guitar. I replaced the active electronics & mini-toggles with a 500K volume & Gibson-style 3-way, and also swapped the original neck for the all-maple one from my Model 2 in mid-2005. It's had a Cool Rails in the neck since then, but has had the following in the bridge: 59, Custom 5, Invader, and now Custom. Ironically enough my bro is borrowing it as he doesn't currently have an electric.
  8. 1992 MIJ Fender Floyd Rose Strat: I Got it from my bass player around 2004-2005, never really bonded with it, and sold it a few years later.
  9. 199? ESP Vintage Plus S: I played this for the first time in 2002 or 2003 and thought it was awesome, but someone else bought it before I had the $$$. When it came back through the shop in 2004, I decided not to let it go again. Once again, probably not the best reason to buy a guitar. One cool note was that this one had Duncan Vintage Rails instead of the usual ESP-branded singles. I'm not sure if they were original, but it sounded cool if not totally Strat-like. I ended up trading it in for the 25th Anniversary Charvel.
  10. 2004 Charvel 25th Anniversary: This was #49 from the first run of 100 or so, and I only paid $750 including my trade. I admit I mostly bought it because it was stupid cheap, but it was also an amazing guitar. It played great, and it sounded huge even when strung with 9s. The '78 was a cool pickup, and I remember the guitar having a real 335-ish tone. Of course this much awesome has to have a drawback, and not having a neck pickup drove me completely nuts. I contemplated having one installed, (blasphemy I know) before selling it to pay rent in Oct 2005. I do somewhat miss this one, but I'm not sure I could have avoided modding it.
  11. Cheapo Alvarez 12 String: I bought it for $100 when I needed a 12-string for a recording project in Feb 2005. It did its job, and then proceeded to sit in its case since it didn't sound all that great. I sold it in 2009 because I'd only picked it up a handful of times in 4 years.
  12. 1986 Ibanez Musician MC2924: I bought it for writing & recording in the spring of 2005. I've thought about selling it a few times, but it generally plays pretty well. I realized recently that the electronics bug me and it has an ebony board, so I'm planning to defret it and replace the electronics with EMG-35JCS/35TW/BTS.
  13. 1987 Charvel Model 2: I bought this for $79 in 2005, mostly because it was such a steal. I played it for a while basically stock, but I couldn't leave it alone. The neck is on my Model 4, and the body has been stripped, routed H/S/S, and modified to fit an Original Floyd. I have a plan for this one to rise from the ashes including swapping necks back, EMG-89/SA/SA, a Graphtec Ghost Floyd, and possibly going H/S/H with recessed bridge.
  14. 2007 G & L ASAT Special (Tribute): I bought this one from my bro after he won it in a Dave's Guitar Shop drawing. I later sold it to a friend in 2008 when I just couldn't bond with the neck shape and bridge.
  15. 200? Hamer Echotone: I bought it for $250 in 2007, and spent another $50 installing a set of '59s. It was a great guitar, but I hated the skinny neck and the tone just wasn't close enough to a real 335. I sold it to a friend in 2013 after swapping pickups myself and learning that I really don't like working on semi-hollows.
  16. 1985 MIJ Squier Strat: I got this from my bro around 2008-ish. The stock pickups sucked balls, but it sounded pretty good with Duncan SSL2/SSL2/SSL6T. After playing it for a while I discovered that I really hate vintage 7 1/4" radius, and sold it back to him a few months later.
  17. 2007 Gibson SG Standard: I Got this from GC where my buddy was manager in early 2010. It played and sounded great, and I was able to get it for $550 since the store had 3 used SG Standards at the time. It's currently fitted with a Bigsby/Vibramate & Phat Cats which I need to mag swap since I don't get along with A2s.
  18. 2007 Gibson ES-335: I bought/stole this off CL in 2012. I love how it plays, and it sounds great unplugged, but the '57s make me stabby whenever I play it plugged in. I have a set of '59s with new pots & caps, but I'm putting off actually installing them due to the lesson mentioned above.
  19. Partscaster Tele: I bought this off CL in 2012 because I wanted the Bigsby and Tele Hot Stack. I may have paid a bit too much, but the math made sense at the time. It ended up being a lightweight body that resonates pretty well, so I did a very hack-ish string-thru conversion, put a SM-1 in the neck, and swapped the neck for a MIM Blacktop Tele neck. I just need to rewire it because the original switch was a POS and was wired so wrong I'm honestly shocked it produced sound at all.
  20. 1993 Ibanez SR-400: I bought/stole this online from GC in 2012 for $140 when I wanted a new bass for recording. I'd been planning to put an EMG P/J set in it and was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and found them already there. Gave this one to longcat, and we're planning to change the V/V/T setup to Vol / Blend / EMG-BT.
  21. 1987 Charvel Model 1A: Another CL sale/theft, for $150 in the summer of 2013. I'd been GASing for a Strat to give my Duncan Strat pickups a home when this popped up, and it's currently fitted with SSL-2/SSL-2/SSL-6T, 50s wiring, & a Fralin blender.

Edit: longcat reminded me that I originally bought her first bass for myself before gifting, so I guess this puts me at 21.

Re: ...Guitarography!!!

It's been a couple years and this was a cool thread, so here's where I stand today.

6. 1998 Guild DV6-AB HG: I bought this one with my student loan change check in Sept 2002. I love it still, and every song I've ever written has been played on it at some point. I had a D-TAR Timberline installed in the summer of 2005 for live use.
  7. 1986 Charvel Model 4: I bought it from my bro when he wanted money for something 2004-ish. It's been modded all to death, and it's my go-to around-the-house beater guitar. Life story available here.

  12. 1986 Ibanez Musician MC2924: I bought it for writing & recording in the spring of 2005. It played great, but I could never get along with how it sounded. Sold in April 2016 to finance the Spector Rebop.
  13. 1987 Charvel Model 2: I bought this for $79 in 2005, mostly because it was such a steal. I played it for a while basically stock, but I couldn't leave it alone. The story of its eventual rebirth is here.

  17. 2007 Gibson SG Standard: I Got this from Guitar Center where my buddy was manager in early 2010. It played and sounded great, and I was able to get it for $550 since the store had 3 used SG Standards at the time. It's currently fitted with a Bigsby/Vibramate and a set of P-Rails with Triple Shots. Currently my #1 because it's able to do both high output and vintage sounds, though it doesn't truly excel at either. The Explorer still feels like home for hotter tones, and nothing does vintage better than the 335.
  18. 2007 Gibson ES-335: I bought/stole this off craigslist in 2012. It's one of my favorite guitars, but I don't know if it'll ever be #1 because high output pickups seem to be in my DNA or something. Currently has a Bigsby/Vibramate installed along with a WLH set.
  19. Yellow Partscaster Tele: I bought this off CL in 2012 because I wanted the Bigsby and Tele Hot Stack. I may have paid a bit too much, but the math made sense at the time. At first I swapped necks, but the new neck didn't gel with the body. Sold this after completing the Lake Placid Blue Tele.
  20. 1993 Ibanez SR-400: I bought/stole this online from GC in 2012 for $140 when I wanted a new bass for recording. I'd been planning to put an EMG P/J set in it and was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and found them already there. Gave this one to longcat, and recently rewired Vol / Blend / EMG-BT.
  21. 1987 Charvel Model 1A: Another CL sale/theft, for $150 in the summer of 2013. I'd been GASing for a Strat to give my Duncan Strat pickups a home when this popped up, and it's currently fitted with SSL-2/SSL-2/SSL-6T, 50s wiring, & a Fralin blender.
  22. 2003 Spector Rebop 4: Found on musicgoround.com in April 2016 for the low price of $399, NBD here. Installed a brass nut, swapped the tuners for Gotohs, and installed a Hipshot Extender key. I also replaced the stock electronics with an EMG-35JCS in the middle, an EMG-35TW in the bridge, and an EMG-BT preamp. It's wired master volume, pickup pan, bass boost/cut, & treble boost/cut with a push-pull on the volume. With the volume down, the bridge is in JCS mode and it sounds like a Jazz Bass with a hint of Spector growl mixed in. With the volume pulled, the bridge pickup is in CS mode and it sounds more like a Lakland 4-94.
  23. Lake Placid Blue Partscaster Tele: First I bought a MIM Blacktop Tele neck for my yellow partscaster because it had a rosewood board and 22 frets without breaking the bank. It didn't gel well with the yellow body, but I found a great deal for a MIM Standard body in LPB on eBay. Set up with an SM-1 in the neck and a Tele Hot Stack in the bridge with a vintage Andy Summers style bridge. Sort of NGD post here. Recently blacked out the rest of the hardware to match the oddball Gotoh tuners.
  24. 1975 Guild G212: Yet another CL sale/theft, for $400 in the summer of 2017. I'd wanted a Guild 12 at least since getting my DV-6, and the price was right. I don't play it a ton, but it sounds pretty good when I do. NGD here.
  25. 1999 Yamaha PAC303-12II: Bought/stole this online from GC this past fall for $200. Set up with a Lace Sensor Red / Silver / Blue set, and a PTB-modded Fender TBX tone control. I need to change the 1500pf bass cut cap to 1000pf for a bit more aggressive roll-off. NGD here.

Re: ...Guitarography!!!

The more I think about it the more of them I remember. Not one but two Voxes. At least a couple Teiscos. Etc. I like hollowbodies, I like odd, and I like cheap so I rolled through a couple dozen before I started playing quality guitars. Hell, I just remembered a few more, including at least two First Acts.
But I have never owned more than three guitars at a time, and usually just two. I am not a collector, I am an experimenter. So I would buy something that caught my eye and if it didn't work out on stage it would move along quickly to the next owner.

Re: ...Guitarography!!!

Zombie thread for sure.

I bought my first guitar from the Montgomery Wards catalog in 1967; it was a Norma. Since then I've been through a pretty large number of instruments, especially after I turned pro in '75. I've sold many, but I also held on to a fair number.

Bumping this again because it's fun and I've made a few changes since my last update. Guitars I still have are in bold.
  1. 1999 Jackson K10 Pro: I bought it because it looked cool, which I admit is a pretty dumb reason to buy a guitar. It was neck heavy and didn't sound great, so I gave it to my bro when he started playing and later added the EMG 81/85 set from my Explorer. He traded it for a Charvel Model 4 in 2003 or early 2004, which he later sold to me.
  2. 1996 Gibson Explorer (Roland): This was my first nice guitar. I bought it in Feb 2000, and it was my #1 until I had to take a break from guitar due to injury in 2010. At first I loved the guitar, but just couldn't get along with the 496R/500T set, and it had a few tuning issues. So of course I went overboard, installing a set of Sperzels, and an EMG set since I was a huge Metallica fan back then. After playing the EMGs for about a year, I plugged it in one day and couldn't stand them anymore. Initially I put the 496/500 set back, and then swapped the 496 for a '57 Classic. A few months later Dave's Guitar got in a used JB/59 set, I bought them that day, and the rest as they say is history. The JB & 59 didn't work out long-term, so I swapped them for Custom / Jazz which it has to this day.
  3. 199? ESP Eclipse: This one played great, but sounded really muddy even with a JB in the bridge. This was before I joined the forum, so checking the pots never occurred to me and I sold it after a few months.
  4. 2001 Gibson Les Paul Standard (Sabriel): This is the only guitar I've ever bought new. Swapped the Grovers for Sperzels, installed an ABR-1 & lightweight TP, refretted with Jescar 57110-S & tried a few sets up pickups. Currently set up with a 59 and 59/Custom Hybrid with Jimmy Page wiring and 50s style tone controls.
  5. 1977 Gibson Les Paul Custom: This was an impulse buy in the summer of 2002. It was heavy as hell and I ended up playing it less than Sabriel even after installing a set of Duncans. When I needed to unload a guitar to pay rent in the fall of 2003, this one went on eBay.
  6. 1998 Guild DV6-AB HG (Lirael): I bought this one with my student loan change check in Sept 2002. I love it still, and every song I've ever written has been played on it at some point. I had a D-TAR Timberline installed in the summer of 2005 for live use. The stock Grover Rotomatics were recently replaced with Gotoh SG-301s, and I honestly wish I'd done this years ago.
  7. Charvel Model 4 Partscaster(Clariel): I bought it from my bro when he wanted money for something 2004-ish. It's been modded all to death, and it's my go-to around-the-house beater guitar. Life story available here.
  8. 1992 MIJ Fender Floyd Rose Strat: I got it from my bass player around 2004-2005, but never really bonded with it, and sold it a few years later.

  16. 1985 MIJ Squier Strat: I got this from my bro around 2008-ish. The stock pickups sucked balls, but it sounded pretty good with a SD SSL2/SSL2/SSL6T set. After playing it for a while I discovered that I really hate vintage 7 1/4" radius, and sold it back to him a few months later.
  17. 2007 Gibson SG Standard (Sameth, aka Sam): I Got this from Guitar Center where my friend was manager in early 2010. Roland still feels like home for hotter tones, while nothing does vintage better than Stu.
  18. 2007 Gibson ES-335 (Stu): I bought/stole this off craigslist in 2012. It's one of my favorite guitars, but I don't know if it'll ever be #1 because high output pickups seem to be in my DNA or something. Recently replaced the Bigsby B5/Vibramate because I didn't care for where the handle sat. The B6/Towner combo feels much closer to the B7s I'm used to seeing on 335s with the added bonus of smoother operation due to the adjustable tension. Currently has a WLH set.
  20. 1993 Ibanez SR-400 (Ursula): I bought/stole this online from GC in 2012 for $140 when I wanted a new bass for recording. I'd been planning to put an EMG P/J set in it and was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and found them already there. Gave this one to longcat, and added an EMG-BT preamp with their blend circuit.
  21. Charvel Model 1A Partscaster (Kurisu): Another CL sale/theft, for $150 in the summer of 2013. I'd been GASing for a Strat to give my Duncan Strat pickups a home when this popped up, and it's currently fitted with SSL-2/SSL-2/SSL-6T, 50s wiring, and a Fralin blender.
  22. 2003 Spector Rebop 4 (Lucy): Found on musicgoround.com in April 2016 for the low price of $399, NBD here.
  23. Lake Placid Blue Partscaster Tele (Koyuki): First I bought a MIM Blacktop Tele neck for my yellow partscaster because it had a rosewood board and 22 frets without breaking the bank. It didn't gel well with the yellow body, but I found a great deal for a MIM Standard body in LPB on eBay. Set up with an SM-1 in the neck and a Tele Hot Stack in the bridge with a vintage Andy Summers style bridge. Sort of NGD post here. Recently swapped the guard, added middle pickup & finished blacking out the hardware.
  24. 1975 Guild G212 (Arielle): Yet another CL sale/theft, for $400 in the summer of 2017. I'd wanted a Guild 12 at least since getting my DV-6, and the price was right. I don't play it a ton, but it sounds pretty good when I do. NGD here.
  25. 1999 Yamaha PAC303-12II (Currently Unnamed): Bought/stole this online from GC in late 2018 for $200. Set up with a Lace Sensor Red / Silver / Blue set, and a PTB-modded Fender TBX tone control. NGD here.
  26. 2003 Gibson SG Special (Ellimere): Found a great deal for this rare color on eBay in April 2021. She's not as light as Sam, but it isn't like SGs are terribly heavy. Currently set up with a Custom/Jazz set as well as Bigsby, Vibramate, roller bridge, and locking Gotohs. She plays like Sam and sounds very similar to Roland while still managing to weigh a lot less. As soon as I can spring for another 57110-S refret, she'll be perfect. NGD here.
