Re: ...Guitarography!!!
I've had quite a few. The most I ever had at one time was 22 including an old mandolin from the 60's my grandfather gave me (that was a gift from my mother and aunt). I had pretty much all of this written down years ago, but with a few recent status updates, so no - I didn't spend an hour typing all this out. Current guitars in bold:
Hondo Acoustic First guitar I ever had, given to me as a present when I was… 13 or 14, maybe… I don't really remember.... Black
Hondo Flying V Bought at Sam Goodies in Neshaminy Mall back in the 80's when they used to sell cheap instruments. A piece of junk, but it was fun at the time. Traded in for the Hagstrom.
Hagstrom Les Paul copy Purchased at Instrumental Music Services in Philly after my guitar teacher basically told me that the Flying V was a POS and too difficult to play to be an effective guitar to learn on. Not a bad guitar, but not particularily great. I seem to remember it having some sort of Bigsby-copy vibrato arm... but I could be wrong... Traded in for the Epiphone below.
Epiphone BC Rich Bich copy Also purchased at IMS. Cooler than the Hagstrom. Featured a built-in, over-drive circuit with a "drive" switch. Also featured a Strat-style vibrato which went out of tune if looked at too hard… Sold on consignment after getting the frist Les Paul.
Gibson Les Paul Studio (#1) High School graduation present from my mother in 1988. At the time, was equiped with active EMG 81/60 p/u's and a factory installed Kahler vibrato bridge. Has since been modified with EMG 89 coil-splitting p/u's with push-pull volume pots as when as Sperzel locking tunign pegs to replace the troublesome string-locks fitted behind the nut. Unfortunately, the guitar was damaged when my basement flooded and is need of professional repair. Needs the fretboard to be re-set and all new electronics. Haven't decided on p/u choice. Paint was getting worn before the flood, but it now in terrible shape. Regardles, it will one day be resurrected and will be pried from my cold, dead fingers...
Fender Squire Strat - Cream Bought sometime in the late 80's or early 90's from George's Music, iirc. Purchased right after I discovered Yngvie Malmsteen. Don't remember playing it much and apparently sold or traded it shortly afterwards.
Cort Steinberger copy Bought sometime in the late '80's. Otherwise, very little memory of owning it…
Carvin TL-60 I've always liked the design and concept of Carvin guitars, but like most, never got a chance to play one due to the mail-order thing… so when a used one showed up at the local store (Philadelphia Music Co) I bought it. Not a bad playing guitar… except the fret-end finishing left a bit to be desired, if I remember correctly. It featured a Wilkenson vibrato, and (I think) dual single-coil p/u's in a Tele-syle configuration. Being a metal player at the time, the guitar had no ballz whatsoever, so it didn't get much playing time and I sold/traded it within a few months.
Fender American Standard - Cream 1995 American made strat purchased used from the Philadelphia Music Co for about $400. One of my favorite guitars and will go with me to the grave. I'd like it more if it was a different color, but it just plays so damn nice. Love the neck. Love the tone. Bridge p/u was replaced with a Seymore Duncan dual-coil for a bit more punch. Not married to it... and have considered swapping in something else... EMG's... Lace Sensor... or maybe an HS-3... This guitar is usually the first guitar I grab when just noodling on the couch. Was also subjected to the "flood" but survivied more or less unscathed. Case was trashed, though, and still need to be replaced.
Fender American Standard - sunburst Bought at Bob's Rt 13 Music which was within walking distance of my house (very dangerous to the finances…). Purchased mainly to be a b/u to the cream Strat, but simply didn't play or sound the same… sold or traded it a few months later.
Custom Tele-copy w/ Floyd Bought at a local pawn shop for dirt cheap. Gorgeous Tele copy with alder body and bound, book-matched, flame maple top with a sunburst finish. Maple neck with reverse Jackson-style head-stock. Genuine Floyd Rose bridge and single humbucker in the bridge position. Somebody spent a bunch of money building this thing... Complete, but needed a professional set-up. So I took it to Bob's... where he sat on it for weeks… and then the store closed… and the guitar is gone… kinda annoying... I've often considered building another one from Warmoth components.
Gibson Flying V Bought this because it had a Gibson Kahler similar to my Les Paul. I think it was purchased at a local music show… don't remember.. Didn't play it much… I always liked Explorers more than their Flying V kin. Sold to a friend of Sam's and I think he still has it…
Gibson Les Paul Studio (#2) Nearly identical to my Les Paul #1. Black with Gibson Kahler. Purchased to be a back-up to #1 and I think I even had it set up with EMG 89's, but rarely played. Sold a year or so later after converting back to the original pick ups.
Gibson Les Paul Custom 81 model "Black Beauty" Your basic, Les Paul "tank" of a guitar. Was equiped with the EMG 81/60 combo from Studio #1 and probably sounded a lot like Zack Wylde's guitars. Sold after I quit End on End and wanted some money to build bikes. Should have kept it. Nice solid guitar.
Gibson Les Paul Firebrand Purchased from a music store in Buffalo while visiting my g/f at the time. Sweet guitar. Only made for a few years in the late 70's to early 80's. Sounds a lot like an SG, but without the body shape I'm not fond of. Has interesting phase-switches to change the tone. Plays great, sounds great. One of the "keepers".
Gibson L-48 Also purchased at the Buffalo store. Very cool guitar. Non-electric, non-cut away, arch-top. Nice tone, but not the boominess of a Martin-style dreadnaught.
Ricenbacker 330 In End on End (my old band from the early 90's), the bass player Sam, played a Ric bass. So I thought it would be neat to play a Ric guitar. Plus, I liked the sound of bands that used them. However, I just never clicked with this guitar. Plus, I later determined much of that tone I liked was due to the Vox amps they were plugged into. Sold to a friend in another band.
Ricenbacker 360 Second attempt at a Ric, but with a different, smaller body style. Again, just didn't click with it. Being somewhat neck-heavy, it felt awkward to play when I was used to much heavier Les Pauls.
Gibson Explorer This is a Gibson Custom Shop guitar with a interesting black "pickle" finish. Purchased new from Philly Music. Case was destroyed in the flood, but the guitar survived. I play this guitar quite a bit, although I'd sell it for the right price. Unfortunately, Explorers are not very popular right now and values are in the toilet. I'd like to sell it for enough money to pay for re-working the Horizon below.
Ibanez Flying V Another Philly Music impulse buy. Not played much. Sold to a friend of Joanna's who is into Husker Du since apparently Bob Mould plays/played a similar guitar.
Ibanez Destroyer Yet another Philly Music impulse buy. Being an old Def Leppard fan, I couldn't resist. Of course, a few months later, the novelty wore off and I sold it. These sort of purchases drove Sam nuts… I kinda wish I had it right now as the better made, set-neck versions seem to be going for good money on Ebay... far more than the $200-$300 I know I paid for this guitar...
Ibanez maple acoustic Again… another Philly Music impulse buy… For a few years, I worked about 100 yards from the store, so this sort of thing was common…. I'd go over there during lunch break… and get myself into trouble… Not much opinion about the guitar as I didn't have it for very long... I think I sold it to another band-friend... maybe... <sigh…>
Ernie Ball Music Man strat Another Philly Music. Nice looking guitar. Nice playing guitar. Nice sounding guitar. But the damn thing would NOT stay in tune to save it's life! Despite even having a Fender-style fixed bridge. I've been leary of birds-eye maple necks ever since...
Paul Reed Smith CE-24 Another Philly Music impulse buy. This was a guitar I used for quite awhile and was usually set-up with dropped-D tuning. The "G" string was sonically "dead" around the 12th fret and had no sustain at all. Maybe something to do with the 25" scale? Beats me... Also affected the "G" note on other strings. Very odd… Otherwise, it was everything PRS's are known for - tight, punchy, excellent playing. This one was made during the transition period where they made a few bolt-on neck guitars with 24 frets at lower price points before they came out with the SE line. It also had a rotary pick-up selector switch like original PRS guitars had. Apparently these not very common as I've never seen another one since. Sam never cared for this guitar, despite how much I played it... thinks PRS's are "soul-less"... and as time goes by, I suppose I agree... it was sold at the same time as the Custom, although with less regret.
ESP Horizon Purchased during a visit to a new Sam Ash store in Cherry Hill, NJ. I looked at it and saw an uncommon neck-thru ESP for a cheap price ($400). This was in the mid 90's during the height of "grunge" and 80's shredder guitars were worthless. It needs an electronic overhaul and I'd like to get a real Floyd for it. Someday… (update! Floyd has been acquired; resurrection pending!)
Hondo strat copy POS plywood body (weighs a freakin TON) I bought from Sam Goodies over 20 years ago… never played much… tinkered with A LOT. I put a Kahler on it and a Gibson humbucker I had from somewhere. During a show, we had our keyboard player (who had no clue how to play guitar) make noise with it during one song and broke the arm off in the bridge. LOL!
Ibanez Synth guitar Bought at a pawn shop in Levittown. Didn't really plan to buy, but after I asked, "Um… Where is the rest of it?" meaning the synth driver module that goes with the guitar and makes the synth part actually work, the guy sold it to me for a dirt cheap price. I think it had been there for awhile, he was tired of looking at it and I was probably the first person to walk in the door and show any interest or knowledge of it. Maybe someday I'll rig up a synth converter for it... probably not... I'll probably put it up on Ebay someday... some '80's synth nut/collector might want it...
Ovation Classical Purchased at Philly Music for the paltry sum of $400 in near new condition ($1200+ new). A deal of a lifetime. Plays and sounds incredible. Finding American made, deep-bowl Ovations is tough. One of those "cold, dead fingers" guitars.
Tacoma Acoustic Purchased new from a store in Richmond, VA in late… 1999, I think. Sounded and played very nice. Then I put it away for a few years to let it "age." Now it sounds even better. I'd still trade it for a Taylor, though... Oddly, the clear-coat on the inside curves on the sides has separated, which really sucks.
Harmony Hollywood Bought for $20 from a guy I worked with at a gas station in the late '80's. Cheap guitar from the '50's or 60's, but amazingly has a solid wood arch top. Sam had it refurbished as a surprise birthday present, but unfortunately the non-truss rod neck doesn't have enough stability to stay in tune well.
Gibson Les Paul Standard Purchased from Bob's after I got some insurance settlement money from the flood. A 1971 Standard with a sunburst finish in "player" condition. Some idiot had scalloped the fret-board - badly… also has a crack in the headstock. Plays and sounds pretty decent enough, but in hind-sight I probably paid too much for it. Someday when I have the money I'll get the neck fixed and clean up the electronics. Update! New Brazlian rosewood fretboard acquired - currently at the shop getting replaced..
Washburn "Explorer" like Carlos in Quiet Riot used to play. I have little memory of this guitar… only remembered I had one some months after starting this list. Probably an impulse Philly Music purchase, but I'm not 100% sure… and probably made Sam'e eyes roll when I brought it over…
Charvel FW Texas MIJ Purchased at a small shop in Hatboro PA after paying off my mortgage and feeling good. I had been hankering for a Floyd Rose equipped guitar and the price was right ($270). Reverse headstock I don't care for. Nor the sort of red/pink color. Will likely be sold after the Horizon is back together.
