Re: Guitars that dig the ribs would be...

I have a strat and a LP and I play them in the middle - not too high or low. I actually find the LP to be more comfortable. I don't know why.

Re: Guitars that dig the ribs would be...

I think archtop LP's are very comfortable. I see LP copies that have a weird cutaway or curves, and they look goofy. Besides, the original design is such an icon, it really shouldn't be chopped up. Maybe scrawny teenagers have a problem with guitars digging into their ribs, but once you reach middle age, you usually have enough saved up calorie reserves, that you're pretty well padded for playing any guitar, except for those with the points all over that look like porpupines.

Re: Guitars that dig the ribs would be...

when i was making guitars for myself out of lumber i hit on an interesting design... i had cut out a strat shape body and left it with no tummy and forearm cuts... it had a strat look and a tele feel... it was pretty interesting and i loved it...

i liked it so much i was going to have Warmoth make me a few bodies like that... they said they could do it for no extra cost...

My Les Paul is nowhere near my ribs......sling it low! (there are a few models with belly cuts!)

I knew I wasn't a skinny little kid anymore when I noticed I had grown into my Strats belly cut.....:(

For me (skinny) they're actually more comfortable without tummy cuts.

Funnily enough, I'm planning a build for a mate. He wants at least one side bound, so I was considering this very idea. It'll be a Warmoth.

Re: Guitars that dig the ribs would be...

I've never been a tele fan becuz of the comfort. A belly carve and an arm carve similar to that on a strat would be nice, but then why not just get a strat? I probably wouldn't buy a tele even if it have body carve-outs.

The comfort of Les Pauls never bothered me. I find them comfortable and easy to play. I'm suprised by the number of people who complain about the weight and comfort. Its never bothered me, in fact thats the way i prefer 'em. I've seen some of the Gibbo's and Epi's with body carves. I wouldn't buy them either. Just seems like they cut away 10% of the mojo.

Oh well, to each his own...

+1. That's an LP, fat & heavy. With that, you get lots of sustain & low end. No free lunch. Unless you have a handicap or medical condition, the weight shouldn't be an issue for the adult average male. There's a lot of professions where guys carry a lot of weight, all day long, and would be thrilled to just stand for a couple hours with 10 lbs on a comfortable neck strap.

You're right! You just gave me an idea for a thread!

I actually prefer Strats without contours. The contours throw off my right hand position.
