Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

start slow...get or use a metronome...start slow...pratice something above your head, that way when you get it you feel more accomplishment...dont stop...start slow...uh....start slow and build

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

:lmao: yeah it did!

ok. what i did, and many have told me to do, is practice scales and push yourself. do them so fast you can do it one out of five times, and keep practicing them until you get it four out of five times and get faster. this is what i did because have no metronome. but if you do, i and many would recommend it.

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

What's the one thing we've always heard all our lives?

Practice makes perfect.

This is true, for the most part. While, it won't always be perfect (duh, we're human), you'll definately be better. Keep practicing.

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

My advice....keep this saying in your head: "Be precise while using economy of motion."

Then do all you can to achieve that. For example: sharpen your pick or play to a metronome or don't lift your fingers higher than necessary etc.

Ask anyone here who has heard my god forsaken playing and they will tell you its fast (they might say it sucks too) but they will definitely say it's fast. I use the advice above every second that I intend to play something fast and it works for me.

Hope that helps:)

So every time you hear someone play fast your goal is what? To play as fast or faster than them? :chairfall For god's sake! :chairfall

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

practice

thats seriously all there is to it. you get good at what you practice. you practice playing fast, you get fast.

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

if you're really serious you gotta use a metronome, every week or two you try to be able to move up a notch or two but only if you can play it cleanly. depending on what you want to play fast there's different exercises although my one rule of thumb has always been don't practice something you're not gonna use in your playing,i.e, no useless chromatic patterns but real scales, patterns' and intervalic ideas.

Umm nooooooo.

I don't where you got that from.

Music is all about speed (tempo) In my opinion, if you are to be a good musician you must learn to play at any speed slow or fast. For most people, playing fast is a real problem at first but eventually if they keep at it speed will come. Also when someone practices for speed they will soon notice that when they try to play slow they are much better with phrasing and accuracy.

So to answer your question.....If I hear anyone who is better than me (slow or fast or vibrato or whatever) then I might try to emulate that aspect of their technique.

I think what he's trying to say is that there's a lot of players with more speed than things to say... and at my snail pace, I'm guilty of that.

We overlook note selection and just blaze away...

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

thanx guys good tips , from today onwards 2 hours serious scale playing for me .

i find its the other way around. learnign to play good slow means you can actualy phrase shti thats fast.

Start slow, use a metronome, and spend HOURS practicing

Re: Guys Advice On Improving My Playing Speed

Guys that can go ape **** on arpeggios at 1000 mph are a dime a dozen. There is so much useful stuff you could be learning that will put the fastest players to shame. A cat that can put lines together puts the fastest speed demon to shame! :chairfall I would spend my time trying to think melodically! Speed will come by itself overtime.

If you practice everyday you should have enough dexterity for a reasonable amount of speed! People who don't have to think about what they're playing are always faster than those who have to think about it! Arpeggios and modes are mindless. You just play patterns and bend the **** outta strings! :chairfall Putting together real melodic ideas is more challenging and rewarding!

No sooner than I finished the last paragraph somebody most likely is prepared to start ragging on melodic playing! Look! Playing melodically doesn't mean you have to sound like you're playing "Moon River" or friggin "Alphie" damn it! There all sorts of melodic methods that one can use that are radical as hell! Let's see there are automatic destinations, pointalism, aleatoric methodologies and the list goes on! You can create some lines that are out of this friggin world! You will have your "fast" friend calling you an alien! :chairfall Your friend will be stuck playing really fast in some boring, stale ass mode. You on the other hand will be all over the place! Exploring remote key centers and playing all sorts of crazy substitutions! Now that's what you call doing your homework!

I would rather be equiped to figure out what to play rather than how fast! Just concentrating on speed for speed's sake is like going to the gym to do squats everyday and walking out with a big beer gut!
