Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

PRS players, please take this only as my opinion only ok?
As you know,I'm a lefthanded player...The other day and for the first time,I got to play a lefty PRS Custom 22 at L&M Music in Chattanooga on my way home from Tenn...It was a sunburst finish with the 2 covered humbuckers and this is the guitar shown in the new "Guitar Galleria" catalog that they always send me if you want to see it...Anyway..I'm a diehard strat player and a Fender guy pretty much and always have been...I have to say that I wasn't really all that thrilled or impressed with this particular PRS axe for the money..It had the wide/fat neck which I didn't like either and the neck edges are almost sharp to the feel as you play..I thought about how many strats I could buy for the price of this 1 PRS?
It might just be my blues/classic rock mentality here guys and I am old fashioned and pretty set in my ways, but I Mostly also see only the metal and alternative guys playing PRS other than Santana and Schon off the top of my head? I started out being infatuated with strats and Les Pauls(Teles came much later as I progressed on the guitar)but I was just wondering what all the hype and high prices are on the PRS guitars? I could have bought this axe but instead handed it back and thought hmmmmm? $2600... :smack:

Please don't beat me up on this guys because for me it's just a topic of discussion and my only opinion,as I Know alot of us love the PRS product...I was seriously wanting one in Scarlet Red from Southpaw last year and now I'm glad I didn't shell out for one...I just thought the neck was alot different and the tone didn't floor me,in fact the pickups were almost borderline dark for my tastes...PRS guys and others, chime in please... :32: :13:

Problem here is that there is a thread on this almost weekly. To bring it up yet again wreaks of just trying start ****. If you don't want to pony up then don't. Go buy your strats and play them. The fact is $2600 is not an out the door price. I bought my last Cu22 for under $2000 less than a year ago. I'm not saying its cheap, it isn't, but quoting an inflated price is a pretty cheap manuever. :smack:

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

John,

I'm sure you're not trying to start any trouble. The thing is that PRS guitars are meant for some players - not everyone. The wide/fat neck can be difficult for some people - perhaps you should have played a wide/thin.

Before I bought one of my Historics, I had a very sweet CU22 with birds and 10. It was an awesome guitar, but the neck always seemed a bit difficult to play. I ended up selling it after 3 years of enjoyment.

The bottom line is that PRS makes superb and beautiful guitars. You definitely have to handle a few of them before you find the right one. When my next big sum of money comes in, I will definitely custom order another CU22.

As for the prices on PRS gear, you are better off staying away from L&M. There are some online dealers that Scott_F. has recommended that can get you up to 40% of the list price. Recently, I was quoted a custom order (CU22) with Artist Package for about $2,610. This thing was fully loaded. If you tried to do that with L&M, it would probably be over $3,200.

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

I've played a number of PRS guitars and owned a beautiful CE24 for a couple of years. I sold it because every other guitar I have, including a $180. 80's MIJ Squire Strat with a single 59TB humbucker sounded and played better than the PRS. But it sure was pretty! Lew

I've never liked how they play either. I'm always drawn to their look and every once in awhile I grab one hoping to be suprised. They're some of the most beautiful guitars out there, but the necks aren't for me.

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

John,
I agree with you 1000%. I have played a lot of PRS guitars and although some play well, I have played more that I did not like than one's that I did. Taking that one step further is every body that I know who has owned one goes through the same problem. The Pup's are not detailed enough, so the are pulled and replaced with something else. Only to fight some more with either the switching system or the way it plays and eventually winds up selling it. I have never owned one and do not intend on buying one, but they are very pretty guitars. The trem system is very good... one of the best. Judging buy your age you are pretty much in the same boat I am Gison or Fender, what else is there???

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

I've had about 6 PRS guitars from Custom 22's, 24's, to the McCarties I own now.

Without a doubt, the McCarty Model is the best one, in my hands.
I think that PRS got it right with that model, but the others seem to lack
something. I think that Ted McCarty fixed the designs that Paul came up with.
I think of it as the Gibson that came along much later. The new Gibson.
I'll always be a Les Paul/Strat player, but I have to admit that if you change the pickups to Duncan on a PRS, you get a tone that's equal to LP's loaded with Duncans. On one of mine, I installed the tonepros McCarty adustable bridge and Duncan Zebra C-5/59. Voila! That guitar plays and sounds excellent now. Still may not be your cup of tea, but I guarantee that if you owned a good PRS, and got used to the feel, you'd love it more. And, to me, the sharp edges of the fretboard feel no different than the sharp binding on a LP neck.

I love strats, but the type of stratnecks I can't enjoy are the slim tapered
70's style with vintage frets. Gimme a chunky C rosewood neck with medium
jumbo frets, and I'm happy.

As the way it is with all models from all companies. Endless search!

Valid point well taken but so far I've only seen 1 lefthanded PRS,and it was this one...

Thanks for the support Lew as I thought this was going to be another one of those flame throwing threads...Again,not any intent towards that at all...I own several guitars and I can buy any that I desire, but It was just purely a topic of discussion...For what it's worth.. :) Basically me comparing MY strats and my other guitars to this PRS..

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

I never cared for the styling of those things. I like the classic looks of guitars like LPs, SGs and Strats.

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

personally PRS are not for me either, but i think a lot of the reason why people dont like them is the huge price tag and hype from huge artists playing them. they are very good guitars - but they arent miracles

Re: Guys,Call Me Crazy? Played $2600 PRS The Other Day,And?

I don't necessarily like the way all of them feel either. They do look beautiful and I'm sure with the right pups they'd sound beautiful as well. PRS aren't exactly known for their pups, but I'm sure Duncans would make them sing.

I originally liked the PRS Swamp Ash Special, but found out it really didn't do much for me after a while. I'd love to try the customs or the McCarties someday. The PRS Singlecut I did play was amazing though, and if I had the money, I'd ditch my LP Standard in a second for one (it was that good). Great distortion and amazing cleans.

Being a lefty has made me very partial to Gibson,Fender for the most part because it's not like there's all kinds of lefty stuff out there by comparison..I'm not complaining and chose to play this way,and I'm in no way in need of anymore guitars... :laugh2:

The lefty stuff always has at least a 10% upcharge or more and it reflects on my given price of the PRS I tryed above? Could I have bought this one cheaper? Probably...The guys at L&M let me in their back room to take several pictures of their "Galleria" guitars...Would they have come down on the PRS price...Probably... :) I didn't ask and wasn't planning on buying the guitar but I did test drive it.. The PRS stuff is always stunning to look at and I'll give it a 10 for that hands down..I couldn't see spending big money and than have to replace the stock PRS pickups with Duncans though...That's just crazy guys! :smack:
