Guys, how do you like my latest Vintage Mahogany LP Studio mod?

It started out as a simple experiment in working with Tru-Oil, but when I got it all apart I saw my chance to make a mod that I've wanted to do ever since I foolishly sold a Historic R4 Oxblood LP. Here it is in all its glory, my Po'mans Oxblood :D

I stuffed it with DiMarzio pickups, Air Norton neck and Air Zone bridge. RS Superpots for vols, Gibson audio pots for tone, Orange Drop tone caps, Gotoh aluminum wrap bridge. Strung up with D'Addario 11's, it plays like a set of 10's!

It's hard to get a picture that does the guitar justice. The Tru-Oil finish has a great shine and depth to it. Really brought out the grain in the wood. It looks 10x better in person than in the photos.

Man, I love the wrap bridge guitars

I tried to take some pics that better show the finish. Sorry, I'm not much of a photog. Here's a couple that didn't turn out completely whacked!

Forgive the dust on the guitar, I just got done playing. It's sweet :D

That's very cool!

I would have thought you'd stain it darker ala the oxblood though.

That's really tastefully done and it looks great in the pics. Wonder how it looks in real life. I don't know... I haven't really liked anything this much since seeing the Ebmm stuff.

Gibson need to employ you. Be proud of that axe!

I really want to get a naturally finished mahogany guitar. This makes me want one even more. Looks cool.

I love the wrap bridge. Even if I can see the plug holes where the tailpiece bushings were. I wish Gibson would build more guitars with wrap bridges.

I always sort of wanted my '98 Junior/Special to have that kind of bridge. I never wanted to do that kind of alterations to it though.

I'd go black rings & knobs on that. But that's me.

I dig the shiney factor on there! Nice work on the fill.

Re: Guys, how do you like my latest Vintage Mahogany LP Studio mod?

Hahaha! Thanks, guys :D

I didn't restain it though. This is the just the stock worn brown finish that was on the guitar and I applied the Tru-Oil after doing my "mod". That's why the plugs for the stopbar holes aren't perfectly flush, I was trying to save the finish around them so I couldn't really sand them flat.

This thing plays incredibly though! It really evokes memories of my Oxblood. I'm thinking of keeping it like thisfor a while, then maybe this winter completely strip it so I can perfect the bodywork and stain it with a dark purple/brown/red mixture to give it the Oxblood color but still let the grain show. I think that'd be wicked.

wow very cool

i think nickel or gold covers would look better..but then i'm one of those that think les pauls should have covers on..

man, very neat wiring job. i'd kill to have that neatness
the solder joints on mine look like spongebob

Re: Guys, how do you like my latest Vintage Mahogany LP Studio mod?

You need to get those plugs flush, man. It was a great idea to go with a wrap-tail but those plugs sticking up are an eyesore. It'll be much cooler once you fix that.

Nice job! Did you notice any resonance change with using the Tru Oil?

Re: Guys, how do you like my latest Vintage Mahogany LP Studio mod?

looks great except for the bridge. i hate those

Re: Guys, how do you like my latest Vintage Mahogany LP Studio mod?

Thanks guys! :smokin:

I love the uncovered pickup look and think that a set of double-blacks in creme rings kills!

ex-250, to each his own! The bridge makes the whole guitar for me.

JumpMarine, no resonance change at all. That's the beauty of these types of finishes. Even though there's 10 coats of oil on here, it's less than 1/3 of the 3 oz. bottle I bought.

sosomething, yeah, you just can't get 'em down to where you need them and save the surrounding finish at the same time. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do the strip and refin this winter. The nice thing about working with Tru-Oil is that you don't need any special setup to do spraying and there are no toxic fuems. In fact, very little odor at all. It mostly smelled like new kitchen cabinets while I was working on this.

Moonsorrow, these pickups do rule! Hard to describe, but it's like modern and vintage at the same time. Thick vintage, like Warren Haynes.
