H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Well, it arrived on Tuesday, and I've managed to play some guitar every day with it since then ... this pedal will not be leaving my arsenal for a very, very, very long time.

All I can say is WHOA -- it sounds GODLY!! I set the amp for a mild, saturated crunch. When I added overdrive, the sound didn't really get thicker or noisier. It just got nastier, with killer bite and TONNES of harmonics! I was able to get the most awesome pinch harmonics anywhere on the neck! When I added the boost, which I'm now calling the Attitude Adjustment, it got even meaner. The tone got a sick growl and even more harmonics for lead work. I was even able to use it bring out subtle accents to certain riffs. It didn't necessarily get louder, but totally MEAN and EVIL!!

I will most definitely be using the pedal tonight with my Splawn when we headline the Brooklyn MetalFest!

Clips coming very soon!

Cool pedal. HBE makes great stuff. How does it differ from HBE's other pedals, like the Big D?

Re: H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

ben is unavailable fer the moment, so i'll answer

its basicaly 3 pedals in 1

the OD is similar to the power screamer, based on the JRC4558 IC.
then there's the boost, which doubles as pure volume boost AND as a 2nd gain stage when the OD is engaged
the mini switch is a signal buffer

and it has an inbuilt feature, so when you use it, it aparently makes you sound like god. tried to coax ben into lending me the pedal so i could pursue this rumour and have 1st hand experience on it, but for some reason he just LOLed

Re: H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

i see you ben.. what are you doing on... werent you supposed to be headin to the gig right about now ;)

last minute reminder, bring a camera!

Re: H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

Camera, video person, and all other aspects are covered, except for how I'm getting to the gig, exactly lol. I'm calling for a car in an hr, but with this rain I'm sure there will be a looong wait before it comes.

The rationale behind this pedal was to have a sonic Swiss Army knife that I could use in front of any amp and get the tone I need. Some amps require OD, some just a clean boost, some benefit from the buffer, or a combination of any and all 3.

I also detest having to bring multiple pedals to a gig or the studio.

Sonically, it has it's own thing going on. It's more transparent than a Tube Screamer, but not as transparent as the Big D. (The Big D is like the Klone -- "straight wire with gain") It has a bit more gain than the Power Screamer. If you took the 5 diodes of the Big D, The Power Screamer would be like diode 1.5, and the Power Screamer with the boost would be like 2.5. They don't really overlap sonically.

The Twilight Drive has more in common with the Power Screamer, but is smoother and quieter.

The end result is a sound that's VERY vintage EVH, Warren DeMartini, or Lynch -- but it has the grind and power of vintage Maiden.

:headbang:

break a leg!

(and tape down sals' cymbals... remember the gig in december?)

Re: H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

Ha!

The tiny drum riser was to blame at that gig.
This venue has a full sized stage, so no worries.

Re: H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

If thats like the other HBE pedals, I'm sure its smokin! Congrats Ben.

Re: H.B.E. TWILIGHT DRIVE *Pics*

Though I am surprised at the lack of wild graphics (read: Rising Sun, etc), I do think that packaging is very clean, and I noticed you went with knobs that mirror your amp. Nice touch.

The secret, though, is in the circuitry:

It looks like that when inactive... but look what happens when Ben steps on it and starts playing... :D

So, how'd it do?
Did great!

All of the things I loved about it at lower volume were there at bone-crushing live volume, too. The only downside was that the show was sponsored by Hartke/Samson, and the guitar cabs were lame. They had no bottom end, which I find very ironic considering that Hartke makes bass rigs predominantly. (And I'm talking about a full stack here, not a half stack)

The tone was sweet and agressive, with tons of sustain and harmonics out the wazoo. Clips coming soon.
