H/S config for heavy rockin...

Thinkin about slowly putting together a Fat Tele over the course of the next year or so...y'know, find a cheap body, get it, save money, get a cheap neck, et cetera...

so obviously this is the early early planning stage but i'm asking so i don't think i can do something i can't...what i want is classic (and LOUD) Tele twang in the bridge with a good rhythm humbucker that does excellent distortion with, y'know, good cleans. I'm thinking of using a push-pull to split it and try to get close to 'normal' tele tone country but, again, i'm new to Teles and all the stuff one would do to a Tele...

Thinking of Choking Victim's 'ska' sound and Weezer's rhythm sound...maybe a Seth Lover neck with a QP?

So regular tele single in bridge and full sized humbucker in the neck? or the other way around???

I think a 59 would be good for the humbucker, but I have no idea what would be good for the tele single.

maybe a jazz/qp

but low output is more twang, so you'll hafta roll back the volume a bit for that. The antiquity surfers would prolly twang the most, i dunno, i don't have much expirience with them

I use a 59 in the neck of my Tele, it sounds great but I think the Jazz would be a better choice, not so bassy. As far as the bridge pickup is concerned I think you'll have a hard time finding a single coil to match the neck maybe a QP or a Tele Hot Rails which is what I'm using in my other Tele. Hot Rails sound great with the volume turned down a little, It get close to the sound of a single coil.

I have a 2003 Fender American Series HS Tele with the stock Atomic II HB at the neck (alnico 2 mags, PAF-like) and a Duncan STL-2 Hot Tele lead at the bridge. They match well in terms of output, and the STL-2 has good lows, tempered highs, and really nice mids. I'm not sure it's all that twangy, but overwound Tele lead pickups that can keep up with full-size HBs rarely are. I think the QP Tele lead would sound a bit steelier, but the STL-2 will likely have more mid-range punch. You could opt for a Hot Tele tapped or QP tapped with 5-way switch to allow for a lower output and perhaps twangier tone when tapped.

If you stick with a lower output HB, or go with a Firebird-style mini-HB or a Phat Cat neck pickup, then the SD Jerry Donahue or Antiquity I flatpole Tele lead should work well with good beef and more twang on tap.
