HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

So, I order up Logic Studio from Sweetwater (pretty impressive service, I must say) and of course, I DON'T OWN A MAC.

So naturally, my windows-based little Acer can't run Apple Logic Studio, and I'm just going to have to send it back.

The new question becomes...what can I use for recording? I've already proven myself to be computeretarded, clearly. But if anyone knows of any decent recording software compatible with Windows Vista, please...do chime in.

Unfortunately I, owning a mac, haven't kept up with the other side of things. I'm pretty sure Sweetwater carries everything so you could ring up your friendly rep who's anxiously waiting by the phone foaming at the mouth at the delirious prospect of selling you something and talk it over.

Or, you could buy yourself a shiny new iMac to run that there Logic Studio and be in heaven. See what I did there?

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

just use reaper. it's great, and there's a ton of free VSTs on the web you can use with it.

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

Just sell your PC and buy a Mac to match your Logic purchase, problem solved :D

With so much audio stuff centered around Macs, you're going to want one anyways ;)

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

Smooth move.

Hopefully you can return it... most places won't take returns on software. Sweetwater might as long as its not opened. But if you cracked the seal its likely 100% yours now.

As for what to use... call 'em up & talk to one of their sales droids. They're generally good & know what should work for your needs.

In the PC world I adore Steinburg & Sony. Been using their stuff for a decade...

for now, try audacity-it's free! hunter(i6) turned me on to it, and while i don't use it exclusively, it's great for taking my base tracks(abelton 5 lite) and miltitracking them together through audacity.

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

Another inexpensive option is Tracktion. I have a friend loves it. It's very simplistic, though-- not sure what you need for features.

Then visit Amazon and pick up Reaper Power so you have a printed manual. Even after paying for the Reaper license, you're out $100, as opposed to the $500 for Logic.

If you want to dump a ton of money into a DAW program that has lots of added stuff, go Sonar. It's about the closest thing you'd find to Logic on the PC.

Mackie dropped the ball on Tracktion, it's fairly unsupported these days, and probably doesn't run on Vista.

Logic is the only audio software program that requires a Mac. Final Cut Pro is the only video software that requires a Mac. Everything else that runs on Mac is cross-platform. (Cakewalk Sonar, and everything by Sony, is PC only.)

Pro Tools runs better on PCs, as does Avid Media Composer (video).

I make my living building PCs for musicians and videographers, there's a reason Apple chose to start using Intel CPUs for their systems.

I'm also a former Mac technician. ;)

How about Digital Performer?

Pro Tools runs better on PCs ...

This is opinion. The question is one that sees ongoing discussion amongst professionals and has not been proven either way. It comes down to the user's preference of platform. Possibly because PT runs the important stuff on it's own hardware.

... there's a reason Apple chose to start using Intel CPUs for their systems. ...

Because Motorola effectively mothballed the PowerPC line.

... I make my living building PCs ...

As you said, you make a living convincing artistic professionals to choose a particular platform.

For the record, I was purely joking around when I recommended buying a Mac because the thought of buying a whole new machine just to run your accidental purchase tickles me. Now that the joke has had a stake driven in it's heart by the above post I feel a bit dumb.

Performer is for Macs only.

Lots of people are using PC's for audio now... not like it was 10, or even 5 odd years ago. The days of "Mac or die!" are WELL over. I exchange projects cross platform all the time and rarely have issues.

Just a matter of knowing your ****.

Unless things have changed within the last 2 releases of Sonar, pulling audio out to exchange with other people is a nightmare. They're also somewhat "non-conformist" with the rest of the world when it comes to keyboard shortcuts & the like.

No control+C/V etc. for copy & paste.

I wholeheartedly agree. It just comes down to which platform you prefer and are more experienced with.

That's good to know.

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

Cubase and Logic seem to be the head to head comparisons. THe advantage of Cubase is it can run on both meaning on windows you can use the thousands of vst's available to buy or free (some free ones aint too bad). I use cubase essential and i find it easy to use the higher version of 5 have more features like 5.1 mixing, more effects, more vst instruments etc.

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

Adobe Audition has served me well for over a decade, even back when it was known as CoolEdit Pro.

Having compared it to Sonar, I'd say Audition wins for ease of operation. Sonor has tons of bells and whistles for MIDI and such, but I prefer Audition's interface and ease of use.

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

I've been using Audacity for awhile, but I'm pretty fed up with it. Don't like the sound quality or the "quirks". Need upgraded, for certain.

Although Reaper just left me scratching my head. I don't know if Cakewalk or Pro Tools are any easier to learn to use, but I'd be willing to make more of an effort with them if I actually plopped down the cash for them. Only one way to learn.

Or I may be in over my head here.

Re: HA HA!!! I feel dumb now. (Logic Studio content)

Hate to break it, but there's really not much of an audible difference between the common DAW's. I mean, there IS a difference... more so depending on what your doing, especially with converting files & really deep, complex mixes...

But generally there isn't.

If you aren't happy with the sounds then the faults are elsewhere... not with the software.

Monkeytools doesn't sound all that different then Performer.

I have cubase Le and still do not understand how to use it fully. Besides it appears to have issues with vista. It worked well with 98/ and XP, but not too good with vista.
