Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

Our Neighbor Totoro
my amp was acting a little funny. one 6v6 was red plating barely and it was biasing hotter than the other tube by a good 4 ma. and I immediately thought back to when I blew a screen grid resistor a while ago. I had replaced one a while ago and so I went back into the amp to see if it looked OK and reheat the solder joints.

i then remembered that at the time I had bought 2 resistors and had not replaced the other one but had briefly inspected it for damage when its partner got fried. low and behold the remaining stock one had some enamel chipping off the outside and a faint burn mark there. so I go swap it out.

this new resistor at r63 went in fine but in reheating the joints on it's mate at r62 some little tiny metal ring thing fell off the pcb :/ dammit. so I had to run a short lead from leg of the resistor to the point that the pcb trace used to be connected to.

then when I powered her up the bias would not adjust via the pot, and hung at about 6 ma. I reheated the solder joints on the bias pot. Finally it works.

The amp sounds pretty sweet for now but I'm worried about that pcb trace. If my wire I installed fails it's gonna take out that power tube pretty soon right? I mean, that's the ground for the screen grid resistor, I think.

also, my footswitch has stopped working. when it's plugged in the trem is on all the time and the reverb is off but stepping on the switch makes sometimes audible POPs through the speaker. Bad footswitch or something?

Wow, I did not understand any of that! :)

My lack of technical knowledge is to blame, not your explanation.

This is just a friendly bump.

Look for crossed wires/shorting at the internal side of the plug/socket or in the foot switch.

so my knowledge is that a 6v6 has the cathode, anode, control grid, screen grid, and some other things. the control grid helps determine how much current goes through the tube and the screen grid helps to isolate the control grid from everything else.

The screen grid has a resistor on it, in this case 470Ω/1 Watt, that limits how many electrons it gets smacked with and how hot it gets. If that resistor fails, the screen grid gets heated out of control and the tube will fail. In

on my amp I blew a power tube and it sent more than 1 watt of power through that screen grid resistor and it fried that resistor. It also apparently had an effect on the one next to it, or that is a new development.

Since I'm not sure I think I'll replace my power tubes to be safe?

I'm worried about these Tung-Sol reissues. some googling has shown that more than a few people have gotten red plating in normal conditions on tung sols, esp in reissue fender blackface amps like PRRIs and DRRIs. Maybe they don't like high plate voltage but my plate voltage is under 400 mV I thought there wouldn't be a problem? I don't really wanna go back to EH (I think they sound muddy) and one of the only other options is TAD or old stock.

edit: forgot about JJ 6v6s. I kinda shied away from them knowing that they have a deeper higher headroom sound... but since they are supposed to be the best for reliability I'm going for it!

well i bet my wire failed
was playing the amp, sounded fine, then cut out and started buzzing. just a steady high pitched buzzzzzz. the fuse didn't blow and I don't smell smoke so that's... good I guess.

i'm not taking the amp apart again tonight, in fact I really just need to take it to a shop. I need a permanent fix for this and then I can get him to look at the footswitch thing too, and maybe my standby switch, it pops.
this will be a good time to get my mom's Marshall haze 40 fixed. it's got problems with the volume cutting out.

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

Good choice there. If you do not have the expertise, take it to a tech. Yet I also love that you just tinkered a bit, who knows if you talk to the guys at the shop they might be able to teach you a think or two about how they decided to repair it. At least that's what I think a good shop should do.

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

yeah I at least plan to ask him what happened and how he fixed it. hopefully what I've already done will help him pinpoint the issue.
can't wait to get it working again.

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

Wow how times have changed. " My moms got a Marshall ":lmao:

yeah hopefully we can get it fixed and then she can run out of excuses for not having learned to play much yet :)
but yeah she's got a Fender MIM HSS Strat in lake placid blue and a Haze 40. That haze is a fun little amp.

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

For the record...when a screen resistor fails (opens) it, for all practical purposes, shuts off that tube.

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

nice troubleshooting fuse! that same thing has happened on a couple of my amps over the years.
Re; The footswitch. might be the cable?
Re: the pcb...yep. this is why the amp nerds like pcbs i guess. Mebbe your next project is a PTP wired deluxe clone? (i know id love to make one of those!)

might buy a ceriatone 2555?

From what I have heard, Ceriatone makes good stuff. You get dinged pretty hard on the shipping, though. They are in Malaysia, so you pay a ton shipping transformers. I'd buy a Weber kit, myself, but I've dealt with them. I don't love their boards, but they work just fine. Being really close by helps a bit too.

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

yeah I dunno if the 2550 or 2555 is something I'd want a clone of, but maybe. The jubilees and slash amps have such a cool marshall sound thats a little deeper and grittier. But yeah they are $$.
Clones don't have as much resale value, and the real thing looks MUCH cooler... but I'm after a reliable good rock and hard rock tone at a good price so i wonder what the best road is cuz the ceriatone is cheaper and point to point

I've also wanted to build a small tweed amp sometime but I'm finding out there's a lot to learn about amps and I don't have as much time as I used to. also my DRRI is doing a good job at coving my fender tone needs.

in any case, yes PCB is frustrating and I have a crappy soldering iron which doesn't help :)

Ive got one amp where one tube is redplateing. This might be cause I wired the on/off switch in incorrectly? Might it be a screen resistor on that tube that redplates?

Re: Had a fun time playing "amp tech" last night

Have you looked into L'il Dawg amps? Amazing build quality, hand made in the US, and great pricing!
