Just a curiosity, if transport was no issue, would you rather have a half or full stack?

I put an option for other aswell, I realise not eveyone would want a stack (1/2 or full).

What would be your choice and why?

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

for what i do, a half stack is more than enough. if i needed more, i'd fit like 2 vintage 30s and two greenbacks. pick a combination when micing, and you're away :)

plus, standing on tippy-toes to change amp settings just aint rock and roll :laugh2:

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Neither...

I've never been in a situation with a band I consider worth my time where I'd need that much volume.

Life's too short to play with bad drummers...

Yep...eventually all guitarists need to get real with thier gear. And separate thier fantasy rig from reality. It's no fun to play a gig with two or three times as much amp as you need, so that you can't even turn the thing up loud enough to get some overdrive and sustain.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

agree with these guys...a half stack is way more than what you'd ever need...1 4*12...i'd even play through a 2*12 if i could get the volume to spread out more and not just stay at my feet...i know, i can elevate the 2*12 but i already have 2 4*12 cabs before i realized i don't really need them :smack:

anyway, if i see anyone playing through a full stack it just looks so cheesy...just my opinion...don't mean to insult any of you full stack playing guitarists

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I voted fullstack considering is money and transport is not a factor.

However, I'd much rather have 2 halfstacks side by side. Wider is better :laugh2:

It was a photo of Jimi Hendrix that inspired this thread, one of him infront of 2 full stacks (quite a common image).

2 full stacks, wider, taller, better all round!

But there is no way I'd be able to crank 'em, would be missing windows in no time!

For now I'll stick with little combos...

can't you just buy a power-break for smaller gigs? or push the head through a 2x12?

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Full.

Two cabs give a better spread, so I wouldn't need as much volume overall. Plus, I have attenuators to deal with amp volume issues.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

if im playing arenas (not gonna happen) then id want the wall of stacks, otherwise a half stack is plenty

2 halfstacks, 50W+50W side-by-side. My way to go, exactly. Works pretty well with monster drummers :D

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I have only a half stack, but at a few practices and gigs have plugged my singers guitar cab into mine and the sound is much fuller. To the point that my singer wants me to handle all the guitar duties live. I have G12k85 speakers in my cab and he has V-30's in his so the mix sounds fat and tight.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Sealed 2x12 get's my vote for thump and chunk. Add an open 4x10 cab and get all the spread you need.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I'd just get laughed at and called pretentious if i turned up at a local gig with anythming more an a head and a 4x12. But i wuldnt go any smaller either, i get cant get the bass response out of a combo. I find an angled4x12 sounds so much fuller than anything smaller. Maybe i just havent got the skills. But halfstack all the way for me. And a fender twin for cleans.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

If I am not going to a PA. Full stack. Yes, it can get a little louder, but the depth and spread of the sound is nice. I run one cab with effects and the other dry. It just depends on the type of sound you are going for, and not how loud it is at all. Whether it is a 1X8 all the way to a full stack. Each has their own sound quality. I guess another way you could get close to a certain cab sound without all the baggage is a simulated cab sound like what a pod uses. To each their own though. :)

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I'm all about the half stack. It looks well proportioned. A full stack always looks ready to topple over. I don't like them very much. Two 4x12s side-by-side could work too, though.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Full stacks are good for showing people you have enough money to buy full stacks. Aside from that, IMO they just aren't necessary.

But then I actually use a 2x12 combo out to a 4x12. So I guess I'm really a 3/4 stack. :32:

For which Use? Home or live??

At home both are for the most part useless /overkill without an attenuator, on a small stage a Halfstack usually looks better than a full, and on a large, open stage nothing beats the fullstack ;)
