Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

I've got a Korean made Hamer '335' copy (I believe it's called the Echotone). It plays really cool though the nut isn't quite right and is in need of attention. All in all, it plays/sounds great but could use an electronics and hardware upgrade to really be a keeper. Can't swing $2500.00 for a Gibson, but does anybody think this is a guitar worth investing the money to overhaul with new parts?

Thanks,
Mic:sad:

Hell YEAH!! Renut that! The Duncan Designs in the one I gave a friend of mine last year were real cool sounding even. Which one do you have, Trans Cherry or Trans Amber? Korean or Chinese?

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

It's the amber burst and is Korean made. Pickups are o.k. but could use a new nut, pots, bridge and tailpiece.

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

The Amber ones were the better issue. Yes. RS Guitarworks rewire kit and a nice set of Duncan '59s would REALLY make that sing. I would redo the nut. IIRC, the tuners are sealed Grovers or were they Gotohs? Put $250 in it vs a LOT more for a gibber? I would stick with the Echotone. YMMV.

BTW, I'm a BIG Hamer fan so I'm biased.

I have been looking for a semi hollow. I didn't know Hamer made one. Thanks for the thread.

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

Korean ones are about 2 years old now and IMNSHO they are the better issue with these Trans Anber with gold hardware the top of that model.

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

I just went to the Musicians Friend and Sam Ash site and don't see any Hamer "335" style guitars. Where did you find yours?

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

The one I pictured I bought used in July 2006. Evilbay is your best bet for one of those. If you wanna see the newer Chinese version look around they are out there.

Great dealer.

Yeah, I would do it. I've heard of a lot of studio guys buying the satin finished $299 Epi 335 clones and hot-rodding them, so why not your Hamer? I have a Ibanez Artstar AS-120--probably made in the same factory as the Echotone--and it's a killer guitar.

And without a doubt, it's has better craftsmanship than my USA-made 335.

Go for it!

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

well i've done this to a extreme on my Korean Hamer Sunburst. I bought it electronic-less from martin6sringcustoms on here. It was a mars music eclusive model from what I've read. Aztec Gold Flametop with Gold Hardware and Duncan Designs...Now it gets often mistaken for a USA Hamer Studio:oo

Chrome Gotoh Shaller Style Tuners
Chrome Gotoh Tune-O-Matic Bridge
Chrome Gotoh Aluminum Tail Piece
Dimarzio Double Cream Air Classic Pickups
CTS pots, Switchcraft Switch and Jack
Orange Drop Cap and complete rewire and resheild
Dunlop Dual Design Nickel Strap Locks
3x Gibson gold bell knobs\
Fret dress and a bit of nut work on the stock nut (maybe I'll go tusq someday?)

These are great guitars and I'm really looking forward to one day owning a real USA studio...

I say go for it!

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

It's the amber burst and is Korean made. Pickups are o.k. but could use a new nut, pots, bridge and tailpiece.

The amburst Echotones were only made in Korea & have been out of production for a long time, maybe almost 10 years, and there were never very many made. It's a nice-looking guitar and one the of better import 335's. You don't see them for sale often, and they are going up in value.

I've rewired a number of Echotones. The Duncan Designed PU's gotta go. Like all Asian PU's they're muddy and lack definition. Put in a pair of American-made SD's, DiMarzios, Gibsons, Schallers, or Carvins and you'll sound as good as Gibson. The PU's will have a much bigger impact on the sound than anything else, but upgrade the rest of the electronics & hardware if you want. Funny about the nut on yours, my current amber Echotone has one edge of the nut broken off (the only guitar I've ever seen that on). That batch of nuts must have slipped thru their quality control.

Another rare Echotone, also from Korea & long out of production, is the Custom, which was red with gold hardware, block inlays & a trapeze tailpiece. Haven't seen one for sale in a couple years. Too bad, it was a nice guitar.

Chinese Echotones are just offered in red or two tone brown sunburst (kind of drab). They should expand the colors (black would be nice), and offer Custom & flame maple models again. That would help sales. Email Hamer & let them know what you think.

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

Thanks for all of the ideas! I'm thinking about Burstbuckers, Tonepros, and some pots. At that point, I'll be into the guitar for about $650 (bought it for $220 used) and I can't imagine a new production Gibson will sound $1,900 better...

Re: Hamer '335' worth parts upgrade?

I'm fond of Hamer's products, but alas, I have not obtained one (yet). Nice axe.
