Hamer for Sale on another forum...

Re: Hamer for Sale on another forum...

I think $850 is a lot to pay for that guitar, should be closer to $650-$750. Also have to agree with sweet_lou and to avoid the wrap over bridge as there are known problems with tuning and intonation with that sort of design.

FWIW I think Hamers are very good value and from a quality point you will not be disappointed (I've got 4 of them) only make sure that you get US made ones. If you are going to get one get a Studio (Custom) just like mine:

nice one, Norman!

I think $850 is the high end of what he could get on ebay ... and I prefer a stop tail.

I think I paid $710 on ebay for my '99 Studio:

I gotta give credit to those on the forum who turned me on to Hamers! I love the finish, the feel of the neck, the craftsmanship, the tone ... I have a nice Les Paul, but I hardly play it, and I've considered selling it and just getting a Hamer Artist.

Norman, I agree the Studio Customs may be more desirable, but I prefer unbound necks myself. :) Perhaps it's not an issue on Hamers, but I have some issues with the fret ends on my Martin D-35, and that's made me leary of bound necks. I usually like plainer guitars
I think Lew prefers the Studio Custom, too, though.

here's a quilt top Studio with stop tail with BIN of $800, for the sake of comparison:

Curly,

That is a nice looking Studio and a good price as well. I don't think you would have any problems with the bound necks so if you ever see one at a good price grab it. I think Lew has sold his Studio Custom and only kept his Monaco SuperPro to finance that custom shop Tele he got. I was going to post that studio from e-bay but you beat me to it.:yell:

As far as getting a Hamer Artist then they are also very nice. Here's my Artist Custom with Seth Lover pups - its one of my favourite guitars., although I had to have the nut replaced as the first string was coming of the neck because it was not not cut properly.

I have had that same bridge for almost 10 years and I have NO problems with it. Sure the other one might be better but let's not make it a bigger issue than it is. And as always, this is only based on my opinion and experience.

Re: Hamer for Sale on another forum...

I really like the wraparound on my PRS. I also like the way they wrap the bridges on the old Gibsons. Not perfect, but the PRS one is pretty darn close to perfection when you get it set up correctly.

Re: Hamer for Sale on another forum...

I owned a Hamer like that in the past but faced string breaking problems with this kind of bridge.
I really like Hamers but find the neck radius too flat .
I really prefer PRS neck shape.

Furthermore , the importer of Hamers in France is a dumb a$$ so nobody want to deal with him. So it's quite hard to find those axes and the retail price is almost as high as a PRS !!!

And they should be almost as high as a PRS. Makes sense to me. I don't know why they are so cheap here.

I agree with JoeBC. I have a '95 Archtop Studio and have no problem with the wraparound bridge (maybe those of us who started as acoustic players are not as picky about intonation :)) Also the '95 should have a tummy cut on the body which they discontinued in later years.

Re: Hamer for Sale on another forum...

one other issue, is that the neck shape changed in the mid-90's, I think, to more Gibson-like proportions

someone correct me if I'm wrong ... I know the info is on the Hamer fan club site

Re: Hamer for Sale on another forum...

Those are really nice guitars, I just got outbid on an emerald green '94 Studio this morning. I've been looking for one for a while now, but I wouldn't pay $850 for that model. I imagine he could get $650 or so for it on Ebay, but that's probably about it. I asked a bunch of questions about the neck over on the Hamer forum, and I was told that the '93 and earlier models had the thinner necks, while the '94 and later models have thicker necks. The wrap around bridge and tummy cut was discontinued sometime during the mid 90's, and the only differences between the Studio and the more expensive Studio Custom are cosmetic...nicer flames, block inlays, bound necks and bodies. By the way, if anyone happens to come across a nice used Studio or maybe a nicely priced NOS one at their local guitar shop, kindly let me know. I'm especially interested in the silver, green, blue, and black ones, as they are a bit more rare than the other ones. I really wish hamer made more of these, I just don't think it's necessary to have ten different sunburst finishes that all look pretty similar. Still kicking myself for letting the emerald green one go, but I guess if I'd won it, I'd be kicking myself for paying too much.
