Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

Re: Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

That's the Import version, I think it has what they call an overlay which is a thick veneer. The USA models all have solid tops.

If it's any consolation, the "four digit" Standards from the 1970s that are going for $4-5K had veneer tops too. Hamer was seeking the sound of mahogany with just the "look" of maple so that's what they did and those guitars sound like GOD!

Actually I just checked out the Korina one. It comes with a 59 and JB as well as super looking natural finish. Veneers don't really bother me much unless they are over exaggerated to the point where they look cheesy. I was just curious.

I've seen many up close pics of the imported Korina model, and I'm doubtful it's made from Korina/Limba. It may be Alder with a veneer, or Korina is a name they're using for the color/finish. There's a big difference in the appearance and wood grain on a USA Hamer Korina compared to the imported version

Re: Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

hey, kherman... that's pretty cool! Is that a special sized body? It looks different to me. Like the cutaway point is round but the other points are really sharp. Did you do that?

The Explorer Pros have a slightly smaller body than the regular Explorer.
I like it. Very comfy to me.

Re: Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

That is really nice. I used to have an 85 Explorer with Dirty Fingers Pups. The one I had was made out Alder, but was really dark as far as tone. Played really nice though and looked killer.

I find it really aggravating that the advertisements are allowed to say things like "solid mahogany body" and "flame maple top", when it is really a 1/16" thick Veneer. I don't mind the Veneer as much as the misleading advertisements. If I am shooting for a tone that comes from a mahogany body / Maple Cap, I am not really going to get that from 1/16" Veneer sandwiched around a piece of poplar, alder, or whatever the mfg had lying around at the time..

I think Mathias Jabs of the Scorps had Gibson Build what was called an Explorer 90 or something. The 90 meant it was 90 percent the body size of a stock Explorer.

Re: Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

Probably a dumb question but what do you think about the EPI Korina's? You think the are the real deal?

Re: Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

The Hamer and Epi "korina" models simply have a (very poor, IMO) veneer of limba over an alder (hamer) or mysterwood of the day (Epiphone) body.

The reason I consider them "poor" is because the veneer is VERY apparent. Looks pretty cheesy. But they are nice guitars for the $.

The regular import Hamer Standards are a maple veneer on a Alder body.

+1. That's what I read when it came out. He had the ones with Les Paul Custom block inlays, flame maple top and body binding

I beleive that's what the EXP Pro is based on.
The original Matthais model.

Re: Hamer Standard - Real Maple Top?

I have an E90 and the bodies are slightly differant than the Pro. The E90 is 24 fret too.
