hamer vs. heritage

Hey i'm looking at getting a hamer studio or heritage h-150. opinions? The hamer comes with duncan's which is nice, I can't really afford the heritage that comes with duncans. That doesnt matter a whole lot though since i can always swap em.... it does seem to me though that the heritage guitars are a lot heavier on the cosmetics, personally i'd rather save the money and buy on *tone*. so are the differences pretty much liimited to cosmetics?

edit: looking at getting a hamer monaco elite, not a hamer studio.

Re: hamer vs. heritage

I like Hamers. I think the Heritage Guitars are nice but a little awkward looking...not as classic looking or as pleasing of a shape. And also a little stiff feeling.

I'd get a Hamer. Actually, I did!

Re: hamer vs. heritage

I've owned both and like them both kind of depends on what you want, check out the heritage offering here (click on electrics, then Heritage)- look at the H-140 - it's a dot neck version of an H-150 with a slimmer body. Nice flame top, Duncans and under a grand. Something to think about - check out the "Other Electrics" also, they have a used Hamer Artist for the same price as the H-140 - NICE! Either way you can't go wrong.

H-140

Re: hamer vs. heritage

I've not spent a lot of time with Hamers, but I do love what Heritage is all about. I have a 535 that I dig a lot.

Re: hamer vs. heritage

I like the necks on most Gibson/Epiphone guitars. I like Hamer necks, but the two Heritage guitars I played both felt wrong.

Re: hamer vs. heritage

I love Hamer!! They are very nice guitars, I love the feel of everyone I tried out, even the imports are nice. (Im getting the import Standard :D)

What's the name of the korina hollowbody? I played that one, it was amazing. Very very jazzy.

Re: hamer vs. heritage

I've played a couple of each, and Heritage seems to concentrate on recreating the guitars that came out of Kalamazoo in the late 50's and early 60's. Hamer, in my mind, takes those same basic designs and modernizes them a bit.

Either choice, you can't go wrong. :burnout:

I tend to like fat necks, i.e. lp standard not lp classic. any difference between these two in terms of the necks?

btw I like the fat heavy body style as well which is why I decided not to get the h-140.

I don't know if there is a Korina Hollowbody but they have a DuoTone and the EchoTone. Bother are pretty nice for jazz.

You're thinking of the Hamer Artist in Korina. Won the Editors Pick for the year from Guitar Player. It's a great guitar. Hollow on the bass side like a 335 and solid on the treble side like a Les Paul. Lew

Actually, Hamer is closer in their construction to those old Kalamazoo guitars than Heritage. While some of Heritage's designs are clearly based on vintage Gibsons, their actual construction is not. Hamers don't look like Gibsons, but they are built like the old ones in many ways, and some would say they're built better. A year or so ago, I emailed Heritage with some questions and decided to look elsewhere. They're very nice guitars and I'm not slamming them, but the Hamer is a better built instrument, IMHO. A used Hamer USA Studio is one of the best bargains you'll find anywhere.

I own a Studio FM from '81. Great guitar. :22:

While Hamers construction methods might be closer to what Kalamazoo did in its heyday, Hamer's designs are more progressive. Look at the Newport with its full hollow construction and a carved spruce top. The old Hamer Standards were doing flamed tops and binding on Explorers back in the 70's.

Like I said, vintage with a twist. :burnout:

Re: hamer vs. heritage

Go with the Monaco. Both Hamer and Heritage make great guitars, but there's something special about Hamers.

Re: hamer vs. heritage

Heritage IS GIBSON. the old factory, the old staff (the expert luthiers who didn't want to move when the factory did), and the old techniques. Guitars cut on a jig not by CNC. I love mine. Mine was a 100% custom order from duncans, to neck carve, to woods (used south american mahogany like the original LPs). All that and a case for about $1600. I'm sure that you could work out something to get the guitar you want for a lot less! It's really the best quality guitar I've ever played.

Re: hamer vs. heritage

i have played a few of each but never owned either. I really like my friends two hamers and he swears by them. i replaced the nut and put some different pickups in one for him and it was very well made. I would recommend hamer to anyone

Re: hamer vs. heritage

As a proud Hamer owner, I can highly recommend them. I have no experience with Heritage, but my Studio is definitely my favorite guitar. I bought it from a private seller without even playing it first, and I was not disappointed. When it arrived, I played it for five minutes and I knew it was an exceptional guitar. I can't quite explain it, it was just one of those situations where a guitar just speaks to you, and you know at that moment that you simply have to have it. If you haven't done so already, take a look at Hamer's web site, the quality control involved in assembling one Hamer is amazing.
