hamer

Re: hamer

I love my (US) Hamer guitars although I don't have any standards.

FWIW they are very well built guitars and underrated and people regard them highly, we have a few Hamer owners here but I don't know if any of them have standards, maybe they will chip in. What you will get with Hamers are guitars that are virtually custom built (they still do most of the work by hand) and you will not be disappointed with their quality - go over to the Hamer Forum as they have from time to time their members selling these guitars before it goes on e-bay.

Re: hamer

There are some bad things about Hamer:

1. They do not offer neck-through construction.

2. They charge an outrageous $1000 to add a Floyd Rose bridge for a custom order.

If you do not believe me call them and ask.

I always thought you could get neck-thru with Hamers.

Re: hamer

I'm convinced that Hamer makes the highest quality guitars out there. Every bit as good as PRS, and way better than Gibson if you ask me. I've never played a Standard model, but I recently picked up a used Studio and I absolutely love it...even more than I thought I would. There's just something about that guitar that makes me play better when I have it in my hands. As Norman pointed out, Hamer is the only major manufacturer who still builds everything by hand. They have some of the most skilled builders in the world, which is how they can achieve such strict building tolerances without resorting to computer-controlled CNC machines. The dovetail neck joint is 40% bigger than the design Gibson uses, which means added resonance, sustain, and stability. The stressed neck system makes the neck rock solid, the fretwork is immaculate, and the electronics are a work of art. They even use Duncan pickups standard, and fully shield the electronics cavity to prevent even the slightest bit of interference. They are also an absolute steal on the used market, since most people feel they need to have Gibson, Fender, or PRS on the headstock to have a quality instrument. I don't know what the Standards go for, but I picked up my Studio for $630, which I think is a real bargain when you consider everything that goes into building these guitars. They are sometimes hard to find, as it's not an assembly line type thing at the Hamer factory. They only produce three guitars per day, and I think I remember reading that it takes months to go from wood blanks to finished product. They certainly don't rush things, and they actually reject more wood than they use. The wood they do select is allowed extra drying time, which means the guitar will be more stable when it's finished. To sum it up, you simply can't go wrong with a Hamer.

Re: hamer

I had a killer Hamer Standard for a while. Loved everything about it: except the aftermarket Kahler Vibrato the previous owner installed. Gave the guitar a spongey feel. I would have kept it forever otherwise. Hamers are the absolute best value there is in a professional USA made guitar. Used Hamers are an even better value! I've owned about eight Hamers and never bought one new...

Re: hamer

You can't expect a large manufacturer like Hamer to deviate to much from thier standard way of doing things. Just putting the jigs and templates together for a neck through guitar would take longer for them to do than the actual building of one of thier normal models. "Custom", when it comes to manufacturers like Hamer or Gibson, usually refers to cosmetic details or using rosewood instead of ebony for a fingerboard or using medium jumbo frets instead of something else. Maybe a differant neck profile, but still basically thier standard model. Lew

I love the look of that guitar. The USA Hamers I've tried have been great. The Standard is the first style I think they ever made. Lots of pros used them when they came out. I want one.

Re: hamer

Humphrey Bear,

Are you saying that only neck through guitars are worthy of your consideration?

USA Hamers offer just as much tone, sustain and mojo (whatever that really means) as any other guitar on the market. Yes, even ones with neck through construction.

How much would Gibson charge you to put a Floyd Rose on a custom order?

Your first question: Yes. For me neck-through is better.
Bolth-on and set-neck are poor man's construction methods.

Second question: No idea. All I know is that Hamer charges $1000.

Re: hamer

Man don't even worry about the neck through discussion - the USA Hamers will sustain every bit as long as a neck through PRS - the store I work at carries the studio and the Monoco Elite and all I can say is they do Gibson better than Gibson. They are a top notch guitar - I want one. And at 1600 for a new Monoco elite that would take a 4000 dollar gibson custom shop piece to match, I'd say they are worth it. In your post I think only the Standard custom is USA, I think the Standard is not, and there is a difference from what I've seen.

Re: hamer

i own two usa hamers and they are some of my favorite guitars, great materials and construction. the imports are good as well but not of the same class as the us models are.

prs guitars are set neck as far as i know, so are gibsons, almost all fenders are bolt ons. all crap apparently.

what guitar do you play there grumpy bear?

Re: hamer

I love my Hamers!!! The neck joint design is rock solid. Just as good if not better then my Neck through guitars...
