What hand wired concert size bass amp head has worked best for you?
Or even an amp you've heard on stage. Looking to buy the best hand wired concert level bass amp available but I'm not convinced yet by what I read on the sites and would like to hear from musicians instead of manufacturers. Thanks for any recommendations you share!

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

Looking like might have to turn to boutique makers to build all tube, hand wired of at least 300w. If anyone knows of one or can share good recommendation - I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

ampeg svt and sunn model t 300 are the two all tube bass amps ive used and liked that are in that power range. a bass player friend has a boogie and really loves it but its heavy as hell so he doesnt bring it out all that often. its an older one than the one you linked to though

Mesa/Boogie Bass Strategy Eight:88 - 465-Watt Bass Head http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StrategyHD How do you guys like this Mesa?
Thanks......

I haven't had a chance to try the Strategy, but I've played the new Bass Prodigy with the quad of KT-88s. Honestly I wasn't terribly impressed; it sounded good but I didn't think it was any better than longcat's SVT 3Pro. It also weighs about the same, produces less overall wattage, and requires expensive power tubes. It's a good amp, but not worth the current asking price IMO.

Also, what do you mean by "hand wired"? If you mean PTP, I don't know of any current production bass head that fits that criteria; Mesa/Boogie definitely doesn't as their amps are all PCB with chassis-mounted pots / tube sockets & flying leads. If that construction suits your criteria there are a lot of good options out there Including the Mesa Strategy & Bass 400+ (really only 280W) as well as the Ampeg SVT Classic, VR, and 2Pro.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot the Sunn Model T 300 / Fender Bassman 300; they're actually the same amp except for the logo. The built-in two band compressor is nice too.

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

If you're anywhere near Atlanta there's a Sunn 300T with original cab & speakers going for $1200, on Facebook...

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

I grew up using only Fender amps so my first choice (which lasted a few years) was the Fender 300 referred to above. The problem was not the sound....great sound. The problem was the frequency with which it would go down. The two techs I've used to repeatedly get it up and running both say the wiring is cheap and obviously done in China. Every time they rewire an area or change out shoddy work another area gives us problems. They both suggested sticking with made in the USA and of course they added what is more of a lay person's description to me of "hand wired." We play outdoors lots and at fairly large events - it really helps to have a very powerful bass amp (we use the Fender cab with 8 x 10" speakers and the Fender cab with 2 x 15" speakers.....one on each side of the stage. We mic up the 8 x 10"s and also run a direct line from the amp through the stage box to the board. Thanks again for any recommendations!

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

If you're running that kind of rig, it may be time to think preamp + poweramps...

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

get an old sunn 300 or svt, i cant speak for the new fender/sunn models but the old ones kick ass

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

Sounds good, too, but I wish they had samples up with the preamp cooking a little hotter...

Re: Hand Wired Concert Bass Amp/Head

does sound good! but i agree, id like to hear something with both volume knobs above noon
