Hanging guitar behind tv

I have wall mounts for guitars where a tv currently is. If i hang a guitar behind the tv will the pickups mess up the tv? I’m running out of space and would really like to keep a guitar behind the tv. There will be about a 1in gap. Thoughts?

I've been wondering something similar... Even if properly sealed, if I store Swiss cheese close to close cheddar cheese, can they end up smelling like a blend of the two?

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

I think Mopar was making a funny food analogy, but in electronics RF at TV levels isn't going to hurt anything-

I think he was kidding. But just in case, be nice.

To answer your question, I don't know if modern TVs can get messed up like old CRT TVs. Usually, you would see distortion on the screen first. If you don't, you are cool.

As far as the cheese goes, don't store different cheese in the same container. It is like storing different wine in the same bottle.

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

Flat screen I presume ?
They can put out a fair bit of heat out the back, maybe too much for a guitar to be immersed in. I doubt you'd damage the TV.
CRT TV's are another thing. The magnets in pickups could affect the picture linearity and colour.

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

Mopar, was that supposed to make me laugh?
Sorry... Just kidding with you.

No, hanging your guitar behind the TV will not effect performance. Personally, I would not hang a guitar so close to a heat generating device. If anything can happen, it will happen to your pickups. Tip: Don't ever transport your guitars on vehicles that use an electromagnetic drive system.

Yeah, it’s a flat screen. I think i’m just gonna keep it on the stand in my guitar room. More likely to be tripped over (happened once already, but i felt guilty hiding a cool looking guitar behind a tv. If i happen to ever trip over it again, it’ll have to go behind the tv. Thanks again for the help!

No problem, Mopar. I appologize for making an issue of it. Just wasn’t sure of your intentions. Rock on.

Open lane, I don't know where in the world you live, but if you are outside of the US some of us forget that living space in apartments or flats is not the same as we have here. If it's a matter of safety for your guitar, I would hang it out of the way. If it can be safely avoided, I wouldn't hang it so close to the TV.

Good luck.

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

The tv is in the guitar room. I should have said “the fun room” because it is multipurpose for guitar and videogames. It was initially just the guitar room, but when i moved the tv in, i had to give up wall space

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

It’s a flying v guitar. A case would be a perfect sollution but the official vmnt cases run $150 new, which i don’t have right now. You’re absolutely right though, a case would solve my prob

I’m gonna play it safe and won’t leave it hung there

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

Can you photo the wall the TV is on and tell us where the guitar would hang? Be sure to anchor the hanger into a secure beam of wood and not just the drywall/plaster.

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

I have noticed dust collecting behind my TV
On the vents and such
This may collect on your guitar

I've never had any issues with it. I wouldn't think they would be legal if they provided enough magnetism to mess with a guitar. Think of all the more sensitive medical equipment such as pacemakers that would also get messed up.

Something like this happened to one of Jeff Beck's vintage guitars. Yeah... The motors are probably encased in Mu-Metal now.

Re: Hanging guitar behind tv

Hanging guitars...not for me. Humidity, potential for them dropping (I do live in Japan where earthquakes are a concern too...), potential for something to bump into them...

I say keep it in a case..
