Happy medium..

BloodRose

Professional Scapegoat
I have a couple old Grover Jackson era USA washburns. The model is MG130 and its a Stevie Salas model.. 24.75 scale, set neck. stock pups are JB bridge, cool rails/cool rails. Mahog body and neck

My black one, (main one) I swapped the bridge out for a Custom 8 as I love those. Recently, it has fallen out of favor.. Its a bit too dark.. Compared back to back with the other one, and the JB loaded one sounds great and cuts well on the lows, but the highs are alil shrill. Pickup is direct mount, so no lowering it any further.. Whats a good in between the Custom 8 and Jb??

Re: Happy medium..

Hmmm.. that’s a thought.. my brother man Ascension and I were thinking possibly a hybrid Cutom/59. And the one in my Charvel is stellar.. but, that guitar is 25’5 and bold on, AND maple neck. The MG130 is rosewood and as I mentioned, 24.75 and set neck. So lots of differences.

Re: Happy medium..

In theory a CC might do the trick, right? Or a JB2 if you feel like opening yours up.

I'm always surprised when the JB is described as bright. I've had it in Strats, Les Pauls and everything in between and I've never, ever had any proper glassy highs from it. Any chance you might be refering to it's infamous pushed upper mids rather than highs?

In the humbucker realm, I've had glassy highs with the Screamin' Demon and the Alnico 2 Pro, surprisingly.
The Custom and the JB, not so much.

I may give the JB8 a go since I have a JB that I pulled out of it to begin with. The Custom 8 has always rocked my world and I loved it when I first put it in this guitar.. Still sounds good, but having played other things thru this amp now, it now seems too "wooly". (dark and muffled)

JB sounds good in this guit on the low strings. Just alil too "crisp" on the highs. Since its a direct mount, I cant lower the high end side down any more than it is.
