Hard rock/Metal pickup in J-Bass form factor

This question is for my bass player. He has a beautiful lefty Fender Jazz but is not happy with the tone. We play very heavy rock. Is there a good pickup in the Jazz form factor for rock?

Re: Hard rock/Metal pickup in J-Bass form factor

Looking at the Duncan web site I am guessing HOT STACK JAZZ BASS or the QUARTER POUND JAZZ BASS would be the answer. Any preferences?

Re: Hard rock/Metal pickup in J-Bass form factor

I'm really digging the Jazz Hot SJB-2 and P-Bass Hot SPB-2 that came stock in my Schecter Model T I bought a couple of months ago. The Hot Jazz bridge is rather flat across the board, but it has a really nice fat and punchy tone. It surprised me with its bottom end. It's not boomy, but it's there. It has a nice punchy mid range, and the highs aren't brittle. It especially sounds great along with its P counterpart, and that's how I run them....both together all of the time. Another great thing about it is that it is hum cancelling. I always thought that I wanted quarter pounders in a bass, but after listening to the clips here on the site, I was actually glad that The Model T came with the aforementioned pickups. Just using my ears and going by the clips, I like them better. The seem to have a tad more punch and clarity to them, and I'm all about clarity. As we all know, one can always add more bass and such via the amp, but one can never add more clarity per se.

Check out the clips for yourself, Bruce, and I think you'll dig where I'm coming from.

If I were doing the Motown thing, I'd probably be all over the quarter pounders, but for the style of music I do, and probably somewhat yall are wanting to do.....I'd go with the Hot Stack.

Re: Hard rock/Metal pickup in J-Bass form factor

I recommend the old SD Active EQ pickups - the ones with the DIP switches in them. First, of course, find a pair!

Since your friend appears to prefer passive pickups, something noise-cancelling would probably be the best bet. A Bartolini 9J-L/S #1 pair should fulfil the brief. The #4 version sounds fuller but those no longer seem to be available brand new.

We are closer to Motorhead than Motown. My bassist plays through an old Ampeg with a RAT.

Quarter Pound and Hot for Jazz Bass, although pretty different are both a cool sound for hard rock. If you want noise cancelling, the Dimarzio Model J and Ultra Jazz are pretty awesome for the same genres.

Re: Hard rock/Metal pickup in J-Bass form factor

I was going to suggest the SD Apollo as a possible candidate, but I just looked at the SD J pickups page, and it looks like the Apollo's output is really weak in comparison to their other offerings. Ugh.

I think I'd go with a Quarter Pound set for the jazz. I hate noise and consequently prefer hum canceling pickups, but I think for that application I'd just play with both pickups all the time.

The Apollo sound isn't weak- the design makes it look like that, but it sounds great (and quiet) with an overdrive. My favorite for heavier music is really the Quarter Pound. Round, slightly gritty, and perfect with distorted guitars.

Forget pickup changes. Sell the Fender. Get a Rickenbacker. They are great with overdrive/distortion.

I dont think he is going to sell the Jazz. I think the quater pounder will do the job. Thanks for the input everyone.
