Hard-tail guitar for hard rock/metal?

Re: Hard-tail guitar for hard rock/metal?

Wow, that is a beautiful guitar! Looks like a lean and mean rock machine :). I'm a big fan of the natural wood look! Yeah, this looks pretty badass...what wood is this? My main dissatisfaction with the Ibanez RG-type guitar I owned was that it wasn't quite "thick" enough (in the tone; I love how slim the guitar and neck are...). Does this one solve that? Is it just a matter of pickups? (I have the Evo 2 in my previous guitar...)

That's one of the RG321MH models that some of us have been trying to steer you towards. :D

The Evolution pickups are on the bright/thin side. (Evo 2 is thicker, but not by that much.) If you wanted to thicken up the tone, Dimarzio makes the Tone Zone, Super 3, and Breed pickups.

Re: Hard-tail guitar for hard rock/metal?

I actually tried the Breed in my RG a while back, before the Evo 2, but I think the guitar tech might've installed it wrong because it never sounded that great. And at the time I figured "if I'm getting an RG, might as well go for the full-bore Steve Vai-style ultra-shred tone" so I went for the balls-to-the-wall Evo-type pups.

Does anyone have experience with the Jackson RR5 (I think it's called the RRT-5 now...), the Randy Rhoads signature? Not only does it look amazing, but it definitely seems to have that balance between powerful and scorching tone. I haven't had the chance to play one though, so I'm only going off clips online. Curious to hear what you think, especially since I've never tried a JB before. But I have quite liked the Custom line of pickups (the Custom8 in particular), so I wonder if that pickup would make the Jackson even more badass...

Re: Hard-tail guitar for hard rock/metal?

As an addendum, I tried out an Engl Ironball last night (through the Engl 1x12 cab), and WOW. What a badass amp! Will almost certainly get that one or something similar (Mesa Mini Rec?) in the near future, so guitars that pair well with that amp are especially welcome...
