Hardcore Pawn rip off

So I was watching that ridiculous show, and a guy brings in a 6x12 cab.
They bring over their "music guy" "who's very knowledgable" to make a deal with the guy.
The customer starts saying how it's a handmade custom cab out of California blah blah and the pawn guy is just rolling his eyes.
They finally give a good shot of the thing on camera, and I see that it's an Emperor 6x12!
Natural finish with their tradmark recessed drilled out input jack on the back. No label on the front though.

They open it up, and I see a few WGS speakers in it.
The Pawn guy says, "It has cheap speakers, and it's homemade, I'll give you 60 bucks."

Dude took the money.

Pawn shops are the worst place to get money, unless you're desperate. A televised one is twice as bad.

Well yeah, but you're kinda missing the point and only pointing out the painfully obvious.
I can understand them knowing what it was and lowballing, but they were just plain stupid and didn't know what the cab was.

Sad but true: Guys like that will hold to two general axioms that came from a tiny grain of truth but no longer hold any substantive validity.

1.) If it's not Celestion, it's a cheap off-brand speaker.
2.) Hand-made means homemade means idiot hobbyist who doesn't know what he's doing.

The flip side of their business is that they need name recognition in order to move product. You'll always find someone to give you a few bucks for a Metal Zone. Those same people might look at you funny when you show them a Centaur. "What's that? Some homemade thing?"

This is exactly how I scored a Performance Guitar for $200 at a pawn shop... It didn't say Fender/Squier or Gibson/Epiphone on it, so they had no idea what it was. Some poor schmuck probably got $80 for it... I talked to the guys at Performance... It would have cost $2000 back in 1985 when it was made.

I sold it for $950...

Yeah, he might have said Chicago afterall, can't remember.

Good point too on this is how you can score good gear for cheap from uninformed pawnshops.

If I was closer to Detroit I might! Except the 8-mile stretch is kinda crazy!

Re: Hardcore Pawn rip off

I got my mostly unused Seymour Duncan 400Watt stereo quad box from a " Cash Convertors " which is essentialy a pawn shop chain. $650AUS which is a bargain for a quad box in Aus.

Re: Hardcore Pawn rip off

Could have been a custom 'modeled after emperor' made in cali. I have 2 chilly bird cabs... Made by a dude in a garage and awesome, but worth nothing as not a recognized name.

Re: Hardcore Pawn rip off

Sorry to say, but the pawn dude could have very well known what it was and just been doing his thing. If the seller is uneducated then shame on him.

Nah, you could tell the pawn guy was really unimpressed with the customer and his ramblings about the cab and his story about his supposed experience with music and who his dad used to play with and so on.
The truth is that these pawn guys automatically assume the customer is trying to lie and rip them off. So their guard is up right away and assumptions start flying. In this case the pawn guy was blinded by his assumptions so much that he missed the fact that the product had more value than he thought. But he came out on top anyway in the end.

Re: Hardcore Pawn rip off

That whole show is completely fake anyway. The vintage guitars that are "pawned" are all loaned to the show. Nothing is ever actually sold.

Re: Hardcore Pawn rip off

I've never heard of Emperor cabinets. Not surprising that some guy in a pawn shop never heard of them either.

Well if it did have WGS then those are worth something. I wouldn't have known or cared what the cab was but I would definitely have noticed the WGS.
