Harma Valves?

Re: Harma Valves?

not personnally but i have a friend who will only use them for the amps he uses. he makes his own amps and strickly uses those valves. apparently very very good. he is making me an amp "voodoo amp designs Weeping Widow" a 12 watt boutique valve amp and they use the harma range of valves (not sure if its the exact ones you are staing). ive heard this amp and its simply amazing.

Re: Harma Valves?

Im curious as to what company the valves you are talking about is made by. since i live in the Uk and im talking about a Uk basec company called watford valves who have a range of valves called the harma which are arguably the best valves around.

Re: Harma Valves?

yeah, if you go to Watford Valves, they'll have info on the Harmas

I don't think Watford makes any of their own valves - kinda like Groove Tubes used to be - but they have very stringent testing & matching

I got some Mazda 6V6s from them, but unless you get enough of an order, the shipping is a deal killer.

I think the JJs are probably still the best current production EL84. Some of the Harmas are Russian made, to certain specs.

I'm definitely not a huge JJ fan after they robbed the gain out of my Triamp a while back (used the ECC83), but the JJ EL84s honestly rock in my Fargen Epic 30 DC

Chris,
I think of tubes kinda like Mexican restaurants - one makes good burritos, the other makes good tacos. :)

I think current production preamp tubes vary a lot in gain. I thought I'd read that the JJ EC 83s were consistently high in gain, compared to other current production tubes, but I also read that same thing about the Chinese tubes just the other day over at Guitar Amp Blueprinting.
I remember reading on Myles' site that the Sovtek 12AX7 WAs that Fender used to use were actually pretty low gain (70 compared to 100 on an old spec), so that the amps would be quieter.

I agree with something Joneser always says - you just have to get a handful of different preamp tubes, and check them in your amp - especially the critical positions - until you find the one that's best for the amp, and it may vary from amp to amp.

I've told this story before, but I went over to my amp tech's one day. He was building his own little 18 watt amp. He switched out the Mullard 12AX7 for a Chinese tube. He was a little embarrassed when he said "it just sounds better!" :)

that may be the whole point - you just gotta use your ears :)
