Re: harmonic design vintage plus pickups

I felt they were a little bright & brash compared to the Antiquities. In fact, they led directly to my replacing them with the Antiquities, which IMO, are sweeter, fatter, more complex, and more responsive.

I know that HDs are well thought of, but they just didn't work out for me.

As for the magnets, the HDs are Alnico 5 - in fact, I believe that all his pickups are Alnico 5 - at least they were last time I checked his site.

I have a set of the HD humbuckers. Are those what you're talking about? Or are the pickups you're refering to single coil size? As far as the HD humbuckers go they are wonderful! They remind me of Larry Carlton's tone. Lew

thanks for the reply curly and lew.

yeah, i was talking about the vintage plus series in general be it single, tele or hummer. apparently, their humbuckers and tele pickups garnered rave reviews.

curly, you are are talking about your strat right? you used to have the vintage plus in it?

lew, how does your hd compare to the ants?

cheers!

Re: harmonic design vintage plus pickups

Haven't tried them both in the same guitar but the HD's sound like alnico 5: more bass, more highs, complex mids but not as pronounced a midrange as the alnico 2 Antiquitys.

They really do remind of a tone that Larry Carlton would go for...they can rock but they're kind of classy and sophisticated sounding too.

yes, I tried them in a strat

like a lot of folks who come here, I was a bit overwhelmed with all the choices at first .. I tried the Vintage Pluses, based on their reputation, and some excellent reviews

I felt they were kind of "hi fi" ... by that, I mean highs and lows, a broad frequency range, but without a lot of 'texture'

If you were to ask me now, I'd tell you what one of my good friends told me years ago: "just get Antiquities!" :)

warmer, more responsive, more fun to play, and better tone

You could get MJ to wind you a set with a 4 conductor cable...but then it wouldn't really be an Antiquity since the old ones were never made like that. :)

Curly's kind of right about the Antiquitys...I've tried alot of boutique pickups but there's something very familiar and comfortable about the Antiquitys that just feels and sounds "right".

The HD humbuckers are very nice though...I like them alot. When Vintage Guitar did a humbucker shoot out a few years ago with Tony Nobles and Terry Oubre and a bunch of other famous and semi-famous guys they chose the Fralins and the Harmonic Design over everything else, including some old Gibson pafs and early 60's Gibson patent number humbuckers.

That's what made me buy a set. But I don't use them! :smack: I have Duncan HB's in pretty much all of my humbucker guitars. :laugh2:

thanks lew! actually, that's what i read that made me consider hd pickups. :smack:

can't deny that there's too much of a choice in the aftermarket pickups business that it is overwhelming! i have tried other pups and always came back to duncans. reckon i should not have doubt myself, duncans and the rest of the folks here like yourself! :yell:

anyway, you will hear from me soon when my mij fender thinline tele special arrives.

cheers!
