Harmonica...

I know this is "The Guitar Shop" forum, but the only other forum I could possibly post this in is the off-topic one, and musical instruments aren't discussed too much their (i dont think)

I want to start learning to play the harmonica, and eventually learn some dylan/blues/original pieces but their are so many different types of harmonicas, and I don't know what type to get. Also does anyone know any good books that can teach harmonica?

Re: Harmonica...

get a diatonic one in C

go to musiciansfriend or sumthin there like 20 bucks, and there are learning books too

Re: Harmonica...

I kinda think you just buy one and start to suck and blow. No pun intended. I think just about anyone that breathes can play one, a lot of practice and you'll start to possibly make a noise that someone might want to listen to.

I've got a buddy that is an absolute master at the harmonica. He's got a real talent for it. But he's played a long time now. Plays with a regularly gigging local band. Country, what else?

Re: Harmonica...

Hohner Special 20, the key of C is a good start. as soon as you get into cross harping (second position), whatever key you want to play in, you're going to need a harp in a key a fourth above it. ie play in G = use C harmonica. don't worry too much about that yet, but it's an important rule of thumb if you're looking to start playing blues.
