harsh brightness with DD?

i have a DD in my mahogony body, maple neck schecter. cleans are piercingly bright and unpleasant especially in the upper registers. on the other hand, my used-to-be-superbright SG has a tamer clean sound now after i dropped my custom in.

help! any solutions/other replacements for the bright DD?

Re: harsh brightness with DD?

Try changing the height of the pickup... small changes in height will make a difference.

Maybe you could try different values of pots too?

Re: harsh brightness with DD?

The custom has a smaller ceramic magnet, which is still harsh but not like the big ones in the DD. My schector (one-piece-maple neck and alder body) is very happy with a Custom (Alnico 3) but a CC would also be great too. Ceramic Custom, JB and a JB with a small ceramic magnet (kind of DD light) was not my wine in the Schector.

Re: harsh brightness with DD?

its actually kinda far back already. potwise i heard that 500k are still better for hums..

Re: harsh brightness with DD?

if a DD is to harsh try a CC, about the exact opposit. What type of music do you want to use it for?

Re: harsh brightness with DD?

300k pots for all mega output boosted mid/high bridge pups. You heard 500k's are better for hums but did anyone tell you why? And did they say ALL hums? No...500k lets more highs through for generally darker hums vs. Singles. But! Pups like JB or DD are so hot & boosted in the high end that they can get harsh...

Re: harsh brightness with DD?

Moving it closer to the strings will increase your bass response. Try starting at 5/32" from the strings and then experiment with 3/32'. Standard 500k pots should sound fine with a DDistortion. Make sure you have it wired right and not in parallell(sp?)...that will make it BRRRRIGHT! Overview : Duncan Distortion at bridge,500k pots,5/32" from the strings in mahogany Schecter = Great tone.

Change the pickup. I find that ceramic pickups tend to have that bright harshness to them, especially the DD with it's bigass one.
