Harvesting cheap guitars for good pickups

So, there is a post in the trader forum of a rare Seymour Duncan blade style pickup called the Sh-9 Silverbird. I noticed a cheap late 80s Korean Kramer for sale at a local GC and thought nothing of it. I remembered that it had a blade bridge SD Pickup in it. I sent fellow forum member metalchurch79 some pics and he said "i would be willing to bet it has a Silverbird in it". Well i decided to take a gamble today and bought said Kramer. Here is what i found,

safely pulled to rescue

Replaced with a more modern SD Invader

If anybody wants a cheap Korean Kramer let me know i will sell it pretty cheap.

I do it all the time.... Buy stuff off Craigslist, eBay, or elsewhere - strip the Duncans (and the occasional nice piece of hardware or a Warmoth neck), and resell it all again for a profit.

Re: Harvesting cheap guitars for good pickups

This is a really common thing, and it isn't just pickups. Maybe a great neck or someone upgraded the tuners, etc. It takes a good eye to see what might be hiding there...looks like you have it!

So what's the deal on the Silverbird? I never heard of it but I like blade pickups.

Take a look at the post in the trader forum. It is apparently a pretty rare double Alnico 2 blade mag pickup wound to around 14k. It sounds pretty unique-has quite a bit of output but does retain that Alnico 2 sweetness to some point. It will be going into one of my Charvels or an 80s BC Rich for sure!

Glad it worked out for you man! I figured with those larger than normal bobbins that you were good to go. You're getting a nice collection of MJ wound pickups and your guitar collection is coming along nicely as well.

Re: Harvesting cheap guitars for good pickups

Guitar is officially sold and I just ordered one of those El Diablo pickup rings from SD. :)
