Has anybody tried an A4 59?

I have a set of 59's but the lack of mids and boomy bass really don't agree with me. I guess I could add A2's to them but I'm afraid they would be too similar to my Seths. I would like to add just a little more mids and drop the bass ever so slightly, would an A4 help do this?

If not, what would be the next best magnet to try?

There are a few guys who have done this around here and they reported good results. I haven't tried it myself but if I had a 59 laying around, A4 would be the first magnet I'd reach for, and for the exact same reasons you give.

OK, now for the follow-up question

Where is the best place to get an A4? I know a lot of the main sites that have magnets only have A2, 3, 5 and 8.

I'd do that on the 59 neck, but not on the 59 bridge. The 59 might sound a little cold with A4, so A5 is best. IMO, the best combo you could have is the Custom/59 hybrid A5 bridge pickup, and an A4 59N. I'd love to have that in an HH superstrat!

I have a Custom 4 nickel covered for $55 shipped, if anyone is interested.
It sounds a lot like a Custom 5, but has a little less bass, a tiny bit more mids, and a glassy top. The main difference is that the feel under the fingers is a little harder with A4 than A5.
