Has anyone paired a PGb with a

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

I've used both but not together. IMO, they are two extremes of the PAF vibe. Meaning, the 59n is quite bassy whereas the PGb is quite trebly. You'd wind up having to set your amp in such a way, sacrificing some of the tonality of both, in order for both to be compatible with each other in the same guitar. Come to think of it, this is something like an OEM Gibson HB paring.

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

the EQ issue is what I'm having now with the JB/59 combo in the Edwards.

grrr...

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

I installed this combination in the 1985 Tokai LS60 of my friend, because he had bought them already. I would agree with what Martian said, in that guitar (rather balanced acoustic sound) the '59n was too boomy (surprise, surprise...), and the PGb too harsh. So the other way round would probably be a better idea, but then you run into the output problem, as they are wound for these positions. It might work out though with a careful adjustment, but I didn't test that, and the guitar is for sale now anyhow.

Hey Jeff,

I used this combination for quite a while in my LTD. Sounded nice with the '59 sunken quite low and the PG set high. With some fine tuning the combination worked quite nicely with the bridge sounding crisp and thumpy (as Rid said, there's not lack of bass with this pick-up) and the neck, since quite far from the strings had a nice smooth tone with good definition. I agree there are better combinations out there, especially if you don't want to spend too much time doing fine adjustments but it can be a very good combo...

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

right now that is how Katana set up the 59/JB..the 59 is REALLY low.

The balance is perfect from a volume standpoint, but I'm having issue with the EQ. When I get the JB with enough bass, the 59 gets woofy (typical, I know)

Off to play some more with it.

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

The PGn is one of my favorite neck pickups, however I don't see why the PGb and 59n wouldn't work together. Is the guitar fairly dark sounding? If so, I don't think the PGb would be overly bright. In fact I don't consider it overly bright anyways, the highs seem to have more sizzle and harmonic content (probably due to the mismatched coils) which some people might hear as more treble content in general. I think the PGb might work fairly well if the guitar is already middy or dark sounding.

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

Put an alnico II mag in that 59. I did it with mine and its one of my fave neck pickup sounds in a LP.

Re: Has anyone paired a PGb with a

The bridge pickup position has less bass and the neck pickup position has more bass just due to the pickups location under the strings.

The 59 is an alnico 5 pickup and will have more bass than the alnico 2 PG.

So using a PG as a bridge pickup combined with a 59 as the neck pickup is kind of backwards IMO.

I use the PGn as the neck pickup and the 59B as the bridge pickup in my dual HB Strat...that just makes more sense to me: using the bassier 59B as the bridge pickup and the PGn as the neck pickup.

Wouldn't that basicly be an Alnico II Pro?

Thanks folks..I know the A5 neck and A2 bridge is a *weird* pairing, I was just trying to save a little bit of $.

The guitar is slightly on the dark side (even a JB doesnt sound too harsh in it), and I like the uneven winds of the PG...so they may be perfect...I wanna try and find out some more info on the 50th anniv. A2s first...

Bro, I use A5 neck and A2 bridge in my LP. But, I am kinda *weird* anyway. :laugh2: :6:

From the clips I've heard, the PG set sounds like the best bet. That added sizzle should be just right in that Edwards.
