I have a Duncan Designed Jazz in the neck of a Shecter Jazz-7
(yes, 7 string). It is split it and like the tone a lot. It gets
some "tubular" single coil clarity, more airiness and more highs,
but does not have an abrasive "pinginess". If you
search you'll find a lot of Jazz pickup threads mention the
quality of the split sound. I'm not sure how it'll compare if you are
used to a split SM...

splitting the jazz in my music man (petrucci model, basswood body, rosewood fingerboard ect. ) gives the pickup a slightly fatter/ more mellow tone. There is a screaming demon (also low output) in the bridge so you cant really notice a large volume drop between the two when the jazz is split.

I've been wondering about the jazz / screaming deamon combination with the splitting options.
Here's the wiring combo that I've been thinking about Artie, starting with the super switch :eyecrazy:
1. Neck
2. Outside Coils Series
3. Neck and Bridge (wired normally)
4. Inside Coils Series
5. Bridge
This would give some interesting combinations, two screw pole coils in the outside coils mode (similar to PRS). The hex pole with the slug coil in the inside coil mode. (It would need the magnet swap on one of the pickups for humbucking.)
Then, add the spin-a-split circuitry to each pickup to let you dial down to single coil for each pickup.
Not asking you to draw it (yet), it seems an interesting possibility. I'm just wondering how it would sound.

It might sound pretty good, but if you reverse the magnet, won't they be out-of-phase in the #3 position? This is almost the same thing that Mincer wanted to do in another thread, except he wanted #2 and #4 to be parallel.
This will be close to the same thing I told him, which is just my opinion, (nothing wrong with how you want it), but it seems to me that to do inside/outside coils is a waste of a switch position. If it was me, I'd do adj. coil of the neck with the stud coil of the bridge in parallel in one of those positions, then in series in the other. That will give you a nice variation of sounds and everything stays humbucking in all positions.
Just my 2-cents-worth.
