has anyone swapped mags on stock Epi pickups and liked the results?

Re: has anyone swapped mags on stock Epi pickups and liked the results?

I swapped the mag on my stock epi pup from the ceramic to a UOA5 and it didn`t help much,,heated it up with a hair dryer until some of the excess wax came out and that took some of the muted sound away. All that and it still didn`t sound worth keeping, I have a GFS Vintage 59 in the bridge now and a Duncan 59 in the neck and it flat out rocks.

Which Epi pickup did you swap the mag in?

Here's a pic for comparison on the mag

The Epi leaves a little off for cost savings no doubt, it came out of an Epi Classic 4, it is allso has the smotthest surface of the mags.

The middle is an AddictionFX rough cast mag, the bottom is an SD A5 out of a '59.

I took an Epi pickup out of my G400 when I had it. Removed all the wax I could (dig the soapbar look! lol), even inside the pickup. I put an A2 in it (bridge) and it sounded nice. Not as good as a European (Schaller etc.) or American (Duncan etc.) pup but it sounded nice. I was getting lots of great tones with it for the while I had it.

My Les Paul pups.
I removed the magnets [ and wax ] from mine and stuck pole magnets in them. Each coil has it own two conductor cable too. Sounded much better than stock.

The bridge pup.

Well the wire and the wind in the Epi's is a lot to overcome.

I think that using several of the mags together at once would be best for overall effect

Re: has anyone swapped mags on stock Epi pickups and liked the results?

I've done it to a few Epi's I've sold, to improve the tone for the next guy. Which it did, but you can only do so much. If you're in a cash bind, it'll make an Epi decent until you can afford to upgrade. As has been said here, get the wax out. Most Epi's have A5's, so the neck magnet is usually okay. The bridge could benefit from the beef of an A8 or UOA5.
