Jim Wagner supposedly makes some killer p'ups.

Anyone try any of his p'ups like the Fillmores...Crossroads?

If so...what were your impressions?

The Fillmores are a very nice pup. They are not a PAF clone, so it's not too useful to make a comparison to PAF-type pups. A bit darker, perhaps than some PAF-type pups, with nice bottom and mids with a creamy top end. Creamy and ballsy. Very articulate with good note separation, they remind me of a P-90 in that way. They are wound hot at 12-13K ohms, but you wouldn't think that after using them. Interesting pups. I haven't tried the Crossroads, but they are darker from what I hear, more suited for Clapton/SG/Cream tones. Not my bag, so I'm not in a hurry to get a set. Jim is a really cool guy, you might want to email or call him to discuss your needs.

LPF doctrinated ears tell that WCR's pickups rule. But I have also seen many folks buying not liking and then selling their fillmores. So watch out the classifieds sections.

Thanks guys....I'm sorry....I feel like a nut because I get so caught up in this. There are so many pickups in which to choose....and someone like me who is a stinkn' prefectionist with this type of stuff....I'm always trying to find that perfect p'up which probably doesn't exist.

I was all set to do my final test on the Rio BBQ, JB, Air Zone, and C-5.....when a guy on the LP forum mentioned there is no better pickup than the Fillmore for what I want. Go figure.

Martian has a set and he absolutely loves them. Hopefully he'll see this thread and respond.

Fillmores!

Fillmores!

I have played to Pauls with them and found them to be very nasily. Which is a common problem with Humbuckers that are 2 hot. Go with Antiquitys They sound better. I would also recommend Holms Pups Real nice PUPS but Pricey!!!!

I feel kind of sheepish saying this on SD's board, but as of this posting, if I was 'forced' to use one set and one set only of full sized humbuckers for the rest of my life, without hesitation, the Fillmores would be it. They have plenty of tight bass with out any boominess, beautiful, cutting highs without the shriek, the perfect amount of midrange for all around character and singing sustain and they respond extremely well to nuances in picking; harmonics are plentiful as required. They are not oinky, nasal nor are they lacking for any kind of drive. No, they are not a super output pickup regardless of their 'healthy' DC Resistance readings. Yes, they are a neck/bridge calibrated set and yes, they retain the absolute best of a vintage humbucker's qualities in addition to what I've stated above. And no, they sure ain't cheap!

I had a set. Sold them to someone here I think when I sold the guitar they were in. and I'm looking to pick up another set soon. They remind me of a Seth-CC hybrid. fat and thick, with killer pick response, especially when digging in. I'm actually thinking of a Fillmore bridge/Crossroads neck for my SG 61RI.

How is it for heavier styles ala Tool and A perfect Circle?

I am unfamiliar with the CC and Seths but I believe the CC has mucho mids.
