Has anyone tried the 78 neck model?

I'm modding a Wolfgang and want to know if anyone has tried the 78 neck that can be ordered through the custom shop. I've got a 59/Custom in the bridge and I might go with a Pearly Gates in the neck (I had this combo in a strat and it works well, as in not boomy) but I'm also considering sticking with the evh theme. Also how does the 78 neck sound split? I want this guitar for EVH, ZZ Top, and George Thorogood type stuff.
Edit: Another requirement is that it must do decent cleans. I like the PG clean, it is a bit thin when split though. How does the 78 compare?

I don't know how many folks have actually tried that pick up. I have not and haven't heard much about it. I do remember a few years ago a fellow forum member did try one and with the 78 model in the bridge. IIRC he felt like the neck model was so close to an a2pro it may not have been worth the extra expense. Like I said, it's just remembering someone else's experience from a while back just in case no one else chimes in.

Have you tried splitting with a small resistor to ground instead of a wire? I use 4.7k and on APH1s it gives true single coil tone - stops it sounding thin.

Yeah, I always took it as a neck pickup that MJ decided would go well with the 78.

I think it might be close to an overwound PGn, which can make sense if someone else said it was close to a A2Pro.

Re: Has anyone tried the 78 neck model?

I can not speak for the '78 neck pickup, as I have only used the bridge model. However, you'll likely find that any of these vintage or even "vintage-hot" pickups like the '78 (the neck model is A2 and 8K) will be a bit thin/weak sounding when split.

So it might not be worth the extra expense? If it's more or less an A2 Pro it is probably going to be too dark for the brightness of the 59/C.

Re: Has anyone tried the 78 neck model?

You'd get better split sound from Screamin' Demon. And it's a great pickup in the neck.

Re: Has anyone tried the 78 neck model?

The only '78n I've tried sounded pretty much like a '57 Classic in that LP standard. That's all I've got.

HTH,

No help here, I've never seen one, much less tried one. I'd like to know, too, in case anyone else asks.
