Has anyone tried the Fender Super Sonic 22 watt yet?

Basically, I'm looking for a tube amp that is going to require minimun upkeep over the years. I no longer play out. Am thinking of selling my Haze and replacing it with a Fender Super Sonic 60 112 or a Mesa Express.

Was window shopping on the GC web site, I came across this amp. It was not on the Fender site when I checked. The GC page does not state if this amp has a fx loop or pre out, main in like the Super Sonic 60 watter.

Has anyone had a chance to try this amp yet, and if so, What is your opinion of this amp?

I like the concept but the price seems really steep to me.

i'd have to hear one before i tried spending any money on it.

Yeah, If I wanted a Deluxe Reverb with more drive that I could footswitch, I'd just go get a used DR and a used tubescreamer or any other of a dozen pedals that people use to make DRs sound f'ing nutz.

Deluxe Reverb= time-honored, road-tested platform
SS 22W= probably pretty cool but looks like some redundancy from fender's team.

i mean, if they bring down the price a hundred or more, this thing could give the DRRI a run for it's money, assuming it delivers on the whole 22W 6v6 blackface part of the tone. That's where you want your money going. If it nails that then everything after that is icing on the cake. If it can't do it as well as a DRRI can, then this amp is nothing more than a marketing ploy, as any money would be better spent on getting a DRRI and a TS.

Looks nice and interesting, I wonder if they're going to offer it as a head too like they've done with the 60w version.

??? I'd believe they make the "burn" sound much more than just the regular setting with a TS on.

Re: Has anyone tried the Fender Super Sonic 22 watt yet?

yeah I was kinda oversimplifying to illustrate a point. instead of tubescreamer, just write in whatever pedal you think will give you enough gain for what you play.
People get some crazy sounds outta deluxe reverbs. For around the same price as a DRRI, but with more features, the whole "too good to be true" thing kicks in.

edit: o wait it's not tube rectified. That's gonna make a big difference on the clean channel for a lot of people. It's probably a good thing for the burn channel. People want their distortion pretty tight these days. i dunno. I kinda feel like if you want tight "burning" distortion you may wanna get something besides a 22W 6v6 amp (like maybe a 100W 6l6 amp with 5 preamp tube LOL).

all in all it should be a good amp, but I myself would still probably lean towards a DRRI, just because if you want a deluxe reverb you get a deluxe reverb.

I think the guys who love the burn channel on the SS, but think it's too loud to open way up, are gonna say the Hell with a DR and pedal, and get the 22w version, crank it way up and smile while others figure out how to get a DR to sound like that with a TS.

To each, their own. I've got 50W of el34s to burn with. I'd like to get a DRRI so that it can sound like a DRRI.

If I want a DRRI I'll get a DRRI, and yes I'll put a couple of choice dirt boxes before it to get different tones. But if I want a Super Sonic with 6v6s and less headroom, I'll get a Super Sonic 22 watt. I'll probably use those dirt boxes in front of it too.

Zzzzzactly. The point is, nobody is gonna get the SS thinking it will sound exactly like a DRRI, just like noone is gonna buy an old Music Man RD 65 thinking it will sound like a Twin.

the thing is that they seem to be going after the DRRI vibe on that new SS. It's written all over it. I wanna know how much of that vibe it can cop.

Yeah, they're kicking the DR vibe hard. I think they mean it for the guys who just have to have that burn channel, which is very, very good, yet want some of that old vintage Fender DR tone on channel one. Either way, you'd get to juice the power tubes further on this than on the original SS, unless you like to play LOUD.

Still, if I want to get a DR, I'll go for a '69 or '70 SF and be done. Even the DRRI can't touch that tone all the way.

To boot, Fender has always had a bit of redundancy in their designs...back in the 60s, the only difference in around five of their models was simply which speaker combo the amp went into, which means that all those amps are exactly the same thing. They've been at it from the start.

yeah I remember turning a twin Ri up to 3 and being like WOAH.
22W will still be loud though, enough for a lot of stuff.
Fender's got some pretty cool ideas sometimes, at least with the all tube stuff. That SCXD kinda turned me off a lil bit.

Can you beleive that when BB King used Twins, his recipe for tone was to set the volume on 10?

:eyecrazy:

Yes...10. He said if it was a particularly hot one, he'd set it on 8.

BB ain't afraid to bring the thunder.

He can play. He doesn't care if everyone on the black can hear him louder than their own thoughts, he's not embarrassed!

Re: Has anyone tried the Fender Super Sonic 22 watt yet?

i gave up on the low power thing. i never have enough oomph! for the drummers we get. 30 watts is the lowest i'll go. 50 seems about right.

Re: Has anyone tried the Fender Super Sonic 22 watt yet?

now that I have 50W I get what you mean. I don't jam with a drummer often but it's nice to know that I can still get some headroom even if I'm loud as crap

i think i heard/saw something in a rockumentary that stated "the britsh rockers in the 70's figured out the 50 watts was the majic number."
