..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

Re: ..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

I cannot immediately bring to mind any instance of A6 magnets being employed in pickups for electric guitars.

NOTE: This may say more about my failing memory than it does about the pickup manufacturing industry. ;)

Re: ..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

Someone here posted a ton of sound clips with a few pickups all using dif mags for each clip.

He had some A6's in there. IIRC, they sounded a lot like an A8, but maybe a tad darker.

Re: ..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

The only p'up I know of that uses A6 is the Lipstick.

It's a very strong magnet that sounds quite dark, but not really in a pleasant way, I'm afraid.

It doesn't really have a practical application in humbuckers, so it's kind of an "ugly duckling".

I got several from Zhang a few years ago. They're similar to A8's, but a little warmer, and not quite as much output. I was hoping they'd open up some new sonic frontier, but they aren't different enough from A8's to get excited about. I was surprised considering how different A2's, A3's, A4's, and A5's are from each other.

I'd still like to try A1's, A7's, and polished UOA5's. Anyone know who carries them?

Re: ..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

My Dano 12 has a set of Custom Shop lipsticks(Thank You MJ!). IMHO they sound great- warm and full, lots of mid not too "jingle jangley" like a Rick. But- the're in a Dano, Masonite, poplar, plywood, Formica and whatever crap plastics w/ a "Rosewood" fretboard. I redid the pots and caps.
I guess what I'm trying to say is in this application they RAWK lol.

HTH,

Are you basing your opinion on lipsticks? Lipsticks are not dark at all and have quite a good sound I think...

Re: ..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

I read a while back that Dano used Alnico VI in their Lipsticks back in the day.

No, I was talking about my experience with'em in HBs, as requested by the OP.

It's even so stated in the post...

Well, you said the only pickup you knew of with alnico VI was the Lipsticks...double check above but I'm pretty sure that's what you said.

No where in there did you say that you'd put an A-VI in a humbucker, unless I missed it but I don't think I did.

So you can see why I asked.

Now I must ask, what humbucker did you try an A-VI in?

Well, it was IMPLIED, but obviously wasn't clear enough.

My bad.

Christian, am I allowed to play the "english is not my mother language" card with you? ;)

Pretty please...?

Re: ..Has anyone try the Alnico 6 magnets ???

I'm not trying to get down on you at all, I was just asking...I've been looking into alnico VI for a little while now and have gathered up some good info but very little that was first hand so I was curious.

The other thing that struck me was your description of A-VI as dark and unpleasant and your example of lipsticks...I think Lipsticks (when done right!) have an amazing sort of fat twang to them but I never thought of them as dark or unpleasant in any way.

I know, man. Just pulling your leg. ;)

Well, the "unpleasant" part was referred to the use in HBs. Also, what's not clear in my statement is that the A6 is not unpleasant per se, but because other Alnico grades being better sounding, available anywhere and costing less.

Looks like I need to go back to english school after all.

For the record, A6 works pretty well in the lipstick being a single coil for starters, but mostly due to its inherent, unique design and realization.

Hope this time I've made myself clear enough. *fingers crossed*

Single coils would be an ideal place for A6's. I think they can work in some application for bridge HB's too, but they don't have anything to offer that an A8 doesn't already have.

I'm still curious about A1's and A7's, although I suspect that sitting between A6's and A8's, A7's may not offer much difference.

I hear ya...

I only know a little about A-VI in buckers but to be dead honest I don't really care in those terms just asking more for education.

Come on now...what do you know about single coils?!
