Has anyone used this setup?

Has anyone used this combonation in a strat style guitar and if so what were the results? (H)(S)(H) A duncan custom in the bridge , an Alnico pro II in the neck and a ssl in the middle. Via email, seymour duncan has recommended this set up for my request for a late 80's early 90's rock sound. If any of you have used any of these in the positions stated please give me some feedback. Or give me a better description of the sounds they produce. I will be using an ADA mp-1 and ADA microtube with a marshall 1960 4x 12. Thanks

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

Hey man, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

I have not PERSONALLY tried that combination. But all 3 are great pups.

The custom is a kicked up a notch or two PAF style pup, it has great low end grind

The SSL-1 is the ultimate NOS vintage strat pup...it can be bright (that's why I prefer the APS)

The Alnico 2 Pro is a A2 mag PAF style pup. It has good mids a solid bass, and a rounded high end.

Here is a generic pup breakdown for ya.

Hope that helps

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

the ssl1 in the middle will help you get nice quack in pos 2 & 4 and a nice stratty sound in the middle. the custom is a good rock pup, aggressive with a tight bottom and crunchy mids. the aph is a warm smooth bucker

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

I had that setup in a Warmoth I had about 8 years ago. It works as advertised. I had it wired to split the humbuckers when combined with the single coil. The custom was a little hot for my tastes but it does rock well. I tend to favor a more PAF vibe in the bridge position so I went with another A2 Pro in the bridge of that axe.

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

Thanks for all your help. I am still undecided on the bridge pickup. Would another A2P have enough output? I will be using an ADA mp-1, which I plan to modify. So I don't think gain will be a big factor. I think I would prefer to stay with the Alnico type pickups for a warmer sound. The guitar is made from walnut, and I don't want it to be so bright. I bought the body from warmoth and the claim it has the same tone properties as maple but not as bright. I appreciate all the advice.

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

For more power but a similiar wind to the A2P I'd suggest the CC. It has an A2 mag instead of ceramic. It will have a large mids hump.

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

The A2Pro is about the lowest output HB. I didn't have any issues with gain but I think mesa's and XXX amps have way more gain than they need so gauge for yourself.

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

I was checking out the pickups again on the website and the sh-14 custom 5 I think? is sounding pretty good. It says it is a cross between the custom and the cc. Have you guys heard this pickup? I play more than just the rock stuff so I need a littel versatility, but I love the tone slash gets on don't cry and many others. I presume that is an A2P in the neck position. Thanks, you guys are a big help.

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

I use that exact setup, except I use a Quarter Pounder in the middle. I think if I were to do it again, I'd go with an SSL-3 in the middle and get it with a coil tap.

Ugh. I tried a C5 in the guitar pictured in my avatar. It sounded too bright. I would go so far as to say that the description of the C5 relative to the CC and Custom is wrong. Instead, I would say that the Custom is *between* the C5 and CC.

Re: Has anyone used this setup?

Does the cc have a huge midrange? I don't want anything that will be too nasal sounding. How does it compare to a dimarzio paf pro. I have one of these in another guitar. Would it be a good match to the A2P? I am positive I want the A2P in the neck pos, but the c5 sounds like it may be too bright for my guitar. Any other suggestion for the bridge pos? I know I'm running out of choices. So I guess it is the cc, another A2P or what about the scremin demon? Is it best to stay with the same magnet types? :smack:
