Hello!
Duncan Custom Custom sound on official website is amazing, I love it.
Several years I used JB but a don't like his "icepick" in my strat and is to hot.
Has Duncan CC icepick?

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

the cc is warmer and smoother than the jb. are you using 500k pots with your jb?

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

The Custom Custom is very very different than a JB, like not in the same universe. And it sounds as good live as it does in the soundclips.

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

Yep, smoother, warmer and less "hot" than a JB. It's a really versatile pickup. Sounds like you might really dig it!

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

I used 250k, 500k and 1m pots and still I hear icepick. Jb is strange pickup. It's bright stiff high and sloppy low end.
I listened to a few pickups samples and CC for me sound the best. Distorion sounds very good to, but I think it will be too hot for me.
Last chance for Jb is parallel and 250k. I'm curious how it sounds
I am looking for a pickup which will be more dynamic on distorion, will be more tight, compact bass, and will be more heat, huge sound.

Put a regular ceramic in the JB.

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

I don't know if it will get rid of the icepick. That seems to be a characteristic of the JB. Either you like it or you don't. But it will sound clearer with distortion. Tighter bass, crisper highs. I don't know if that's how you mean by more dynamic.

I mean that when I decrease volume pot i get crunch/clean which is not compressed, i.e. when I slightly pick I get low volume and when I hard pick I get bigger volume.
If you understand what I mean. Sorry for my english.

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

Oh, no problem with your English. It's just that words like "dynamics" can mean different things to different people's ears. So it's tough for me to answer it objectively.

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

I will say that I think a regular ceramic will clean up better and compress less than a double thick ceramic, while still giving a tighter bottom and clearer top under distortion than the A5.

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

I always use 500k. If you don't want it as bright, use a 250k.

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

Don't go 250k - just roll down your tone knob for that.

The ceramic jb will have less sparkly cleans than the a5 does.

What amp and speakers are you using with JB loaded Strat that is giving you a bright stiff high and sloppy low end ? As far as what your looking for in a pickup in this post I quoted I`d recommend the Duncan Distortion or Dimarzio Super Distortion

I think the 59/Custom Hybrid achieves what you are looking for, and isn't too hot.

I use guitar Rig. I used DSL 401 to play in the band but it sound very dark and muddy. I will buy Marshall Valvestate with 2x12 Celestion g12t, sounds great, but still I hear sloppy/spongy low end.

I`d recommend the Duncan Distortion or Dimarzio Super Distortion
I looked the equipment of my favorites and mainly prevail ceramic pickups.
George Lynch - Duncan Distortion
Mick Mars - Dimarzio Super Distortion
Phill Collen- Super D, Super 3
John Sykes (1987 whitesnake)- Gibson Dirty Fingers
Steve Vai with Whitesnake - Slip of the Tounge- I don't know but I see now he use ceramic dimarzio pickups.
I love his solo neck tone, does anyone know what pickup he used? 2:37

Kiss - I read that They use Distortion and Super Distortion
Chris Risola (Steelheart 1990 album) - probably he used emg 81
Nuno Bettencourt- bill lawrence 500

What are the differences between D and SD?

Tighter bass
You mean stronger bass or more compact/strict/dry bass?

Re: Has Duncan CC "icepick"?

Stronger less flubby bass.
Oh and George Lynch also used a JB with a regular ceramic, thus earning it the nickname "Dokkenbucker".

Stronger less flubby bass - That's what I'm looking for.
What album did he use it for? I love his tone on Under Lock and Key and Lynch Mob.
I heard that he doesn't like JB, but JB+ probably is between jb and distortion.
Has Dimarzio regular or oversized ceramic?
