but on my Ibanez, i was just finishing up a setup and 'finalizing' everything. I was playing it a bit just seeing how it feels, and I noticed that my bridge pup ('59) is quite a bit louder than my neck pup (Jazz). Yes, I've messed with the heights and everything..... the neck pup is higher than the bridge (which is considerably lower than recommended according the Dan Erlewine's book; its about flush with the pickup ring). But it's considerably louder and more... i dunno how to put it... "there and up front" than the neck. I dont remember it being like this, but it could have been. It just sounds really really trebly with no body to it. And no, it shouldnt be a phase issue. Any ideas?

I'm no pro on this, but it might be something to do with the push pull pots. Also, make sure any pieces of metal that aren't supposed to be touching aren't touching.

The Jazz i s a low output, but shouldn't be totally overpowered by a '59. I'd check both PU's on a multimeter, and make sure you have both coils working on the neck.

FWIW, I have a jazz/jb in my les paul and don't have any problems balancing the two, and the jb has a higher output than the 59. I would go with blueman's advice as your first course of action. I hope this setup works out for you!

how do i do so without disconnecting the pup? If i did that (disconnect), then I wouldnt be able to tell the problem. The coil tap works as expected, so I figure its working on total output theoretically..... tell me how to check it and I'll see

for that i think you'd be ok by putting the multimeter on the output jack

Jeremy just told me how to do this.....couldn't find the post.

...Plug the shortest cable you have into the output jack...make sure:

-selector switch is on position of pup to be tested
-vol/tone @ full
-tap is set for both coils on pup

Place ohmeter probes on tip and sleeve of cable end

reading will be slightly lower than published spec.....

Neck: 8.4K
Bridge: 7.3K

The readings seem to be backwards.... the 8.4 (though a little hot) is close the listed '59 output of 8.13 and the 7.3 is a little less than the expected output of 7.72 for a Jazz. But now that REALLY throws me for a loop. The bridge's pup is connected to the back pot (in my middle picture, its the pot closest), and the output of that pot goes to the expected switch lug that a bridge should go to..... coil cut and volume in that switch selection work as expected. Same goes for the neck..... The first time I wired this thing up, I found that the switch was wired backwards.... or so I thought. Maybe for SOME REASON, the neck's pup wires come out closer to the bridge that the bridge puo's wires and I have them mixed around..... I gotta go do some trouble shooting. Can anyone look at my pics and see if they think the switch is wired up wrong? I think it's how it was before and it was right I believe

hm.. tried some stuff, but I dont have access to any of my tools as they're all packed up (I'm moving back to school tomorrow morning). I tried pulling on the pup's wires and look to see if either pup (on the outside) moved to make sure i didnt get my wire holes mixed up somehow, but neither pup moved. I tried messing with heights, and though it kinda leaned towards my gut feeling of it being wired backwards, it wasnt concrete enough to tell. In the meantime, any opinions?
