Hats Off To El Becko

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

Hey, nice. Good tone. During the first minute or so, i kinda heard Blackmore and Rory, then after that it seemed to be more 'Jeff-like'. Just my humble opinions. There's definitely something really organic in the sound without the pick, and the Strat really becomes a wrestling match for BOTH hands. But the tones are worth the effort.

I'd just love it if you could tell us it was just some valve amp with a simple booster pedal, too, rather than some complex pile of techno doo-dad's, but either way it sounds great.......thanks for sharing that.....i think there's a lot of people on here who really need to hear this.......

cheers, neil.

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

Thanks Neil. Yeah, I guess there's no hiding the Blackmore influence!

It's a very simple single channel valve amp with a late 70's block logo MXR Distortion +

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

errm.....dare i ask......was it a non-master volume amp?

(not that it matters, it speaks to me that you have tone in you and will get it regardless of equipment....but.....well, i just like to collect points for dinosaur amps, heheheee)

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

Well, it does have a master volume, but it's essentially based around a Fender Bassman's preamp circuit, but with EL-34's in the power stage, so it's a bit of a hybrid. Handmade in Geelong, no less! Here's some pics.

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

Hey that's an old sweetie of an amp! It has that delivery of sound of EL34's but without the fearsome crunch of a Marshall, it sounds lovely.

In as much as i am reluctant to ask (and i may have read this here somewhere but i can't remember...)....what pickups are in your old Strat? I am reluctant to ask because for my money, your tone is coming primarily from yourself, and i donn't think it's healthy or polite to dwell on the gear, but i am curious because i think your Strat is 60's?....and yet it has the beefier tone of the fifties (i am not a real knowledgeable Strat person, but i recently got some BareKnuckle Apache pickups, based on '54 models, which have this similar fuller tone)

BTW, over and above all this stuff about the gear, i enjoyed the playing
, it's great to hear straight out guitar playing with feel and passion.....

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

The original pickups in my Strat died a microphonic death in 1985, and I replaced them with Seymour Duncans. They are an SSL-1 in the neck, SSL-1 RW/RP in the middle and SSL-5 in the bridge, so some of the heaftier weight in that clip is coming from the higher output and rolled off top end of the SSL-5. I tried some Antiquity Surfers in it recently, plus a custom shop alnico II bridge pickup, courtesy of Seymour for having helped organize the User Group Day here last September (which brought me to this forum!), but they just sounded a little too hyped in the top end for that guitar. It seems to like nice simple pickups that don't get in the way of the sound of the wood.

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

very happenin tone and phrasing ... very cool vibe you got goin' on there, mate ... thanks for sharing it

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

I enjoyed that quite a bit, great job. You just threw that together today from scratch?!?

Definitely can hear some Blackmore in there.

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

Thanks for listening guys. Yeah, the whole thing was fingerpicked, and I created it from scratch in a few hours, thanks to Addictive Drums, my trusty old P Bass copy and the Lounge Lizard Wurlitzer plug-in. It was recorded in Logic Pro 8 on my Mac.

Re: Hats Off To El Becko

I hear taste, class, & refinement in your playing.

It's obvious you & I have absolutely nothing in common.
