Have a dead coil in a bridge humbucker. Looking for advice on replacement coil.

Hi gang,

I picked up a used set of David Allen P51's and unfortunately the slug coil on the bridge pup was damaged at some point, perhaps by the cover.

Anyhow I have no idea how this pup sounds normally but I like clear PAF'ish pickups but also like some muscle in the bridge. Hoping maybe I can make a Custom/59'ish type of hot PAF bridge out of this.

The screw coil reads 4.3ohms. What slug coil would you guys recommend me trying? I know that's a bit of a weird question but I have a huge pile of humbuckers and sacrificing one for this project isn't out of the question. I do have a Screamin '59 hybrid (lol...or maybe 59 demons?) I built, which was too polite for me; maybe the demon slug coil here? Maybe a custom coil?

Why not send it to David for repair?

I can always do that, but I can tweak it for free. I can't see a fix being cheaper than $75-80 all in with shipping, and I bought the set for $125.

what lonely coils to you have laying around? 4.3k of #42 is a fine start, another paf coil would be fine. the demon coil will probably get you a result similar in someways to your 59/demon. if thats too wimpy then id look at something hotter. going to stick with the p51 a4 magnet?

I have a slew of magnets as well, but I thought I'd keep the magnet the same. Aside from the 59/demon I don't have any "lonely" coils. I'd have to rip apart a different pickup but I'm ok with that for the most part. I must have 60+ of them from GFS and Tonerider to Dimarzio/Duncan, to Manlius, PRS, Dallen, Bartolini, etc. Mostly medium output pickups and a handful of hot ones.

i might go for something with a heavy #42 wind if you have it, if not then a medium/heavy #43 wind which may end up similar to the 59/custom

How do I find out which humbuckers are wound with which wire? Seems like most makers don't publish that info, and I can't tell by looking at it.

?
