Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

It seems that everyone will have a dozen dirt/drive/distortion etc. pedals, and now, maybe some ( like me ) also have some multiple FX boards, but do you have some funky### weird pedal you like to noodle/jam/session/gig with that not many folks might have, or know about ?

I'm not much help, although I have a volume pedal I like, and a line selector I've been using to jump between stacked heads on a 2X12. That's kind of fun.

Anyone else ?

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

the only real effect i use much besides boost/drive and reverb is my rotosphere which i really like

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

Not that it is unusual by any means... but I rediscovered mine a couple of days ago. The Wah-wah...

Funky - yes!
Non dist/drive - yes!
Unusual - no! but what's more unusual is people being really good at using one, imo ;)

I built a Dan Armstrong Green Ringer clone a while back...switch to the rhythm pickup, roll off the tone control, and its a sweet octave up/pseudo-ring-mod effect. Awesome for laying down some sonic destruction ;).

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

Ooooooh, I had two pedals I used to love by Boss. I'm pretty sure they were Boss. The Octave Divider and the T-Wah. The Octave Divider would give you the note you played plus a note an octave lower, or two octaves lower, or both the one and two octaves lower IIRC. The T-Wah was just an automatic wah, but it was pretty cool for funky stuff.

The EH bassballs is napalm in a can when used with guitar. I'm also a fan of the Digitech synth-wah. Some pretty anarchic sounds to be had

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

flange and true pitch vibrato

you'll never go back....

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

Whammy pedals are the stuff :)

Seriously, most people just go "woooo-weeeee" with them, but there's SOOOO much other cool, less obvious stuff to be done.

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

I like to use my ultimate octave pedal to make wierd dissonant sounds by intentionally hitting 2 conflicting notes. So many people say octaves can only be used with much skill and only with the knowledge of what notes complement each other. I have alot of fun discovering what the other side of the coin holds. Also, turning up my chorus and phaser to extreme levels not normally used makes for some interesting stuff. +1 to the line 6 delay. I love doing a run on the guitar and then fiddling with the time and repeats knobs.

Same frame of mind as Jimmy Page. I read once that when he buys a pedal, he reads to see what it's supposed to do--then he does everything else.

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

I got a boss ME-30 that I got this real cool phased out fuzz with some delay. Really thick sounding distortion with that modulation, sound awesome to just jam around with.

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

I like to use my MM4's ring modulator mixed in with the dry signal to make real weird sounds occasionally.

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

What could be more funky than an envelope filter?
I have four of 'em...

1: EHX Mini Q-tron. Great pedal, but it boosts the signal level quite a bit and its resonance is somewhat agressive. It definitely does make you get heard though :). I use this one for guitar only, but it is equally well suited for bass. Will only go up, which is somewhat limiting.
2: Maxon AF-9. Very versatile. Has a nice analog warmth and vibe to it. Will go both up and down, and is very userfriendly. Great pedal!
3: EBS BassIQ. The one I use most, and for bass only. Sounds very modern in the Hi Q-mode. Regular up and down mode are nice too, warmer and more dense. I mainly use Hi Q-mode though. Great pedal!
4: X-otic Robotalk Bass. Weird pedal... Definitely very original concept, but everything that makes a great envelope filter is not in here, including all the controls that help you shape the effect and tone. This one only has a range and level knob. No threshold, strangely enough, and nothing to alter the Q. The range knob is a great feature though. AND: you can hook up an expression pedal and control the filter manually! I currently use this with a Roland EV-5 as a bass wah. It's for sale though, because of the lack of a threshold-pot. If you use the envelope filter mode alone, you'll need a booster of some sort to match the output level of your bass to the fixed threshold of the pedal...
This pedal's other function, the 'random arpeggiator' (actually it's more of a sample & hold-filter), is great fun but totally useless without something like a tap tempo switch, and almost inaudible in a band because its level is much lower than that of the envelope filter. It's fun though... Check out this demonstration by Larry Kimpel.

Other than that, I have a TC Electronic Vintage Delay, EBS Red Twister chorus, Fulltone Bassdrive, Fulltone Supatrem, Rodenberg GAS 828 overdrive, EB VPjr volume pedal, Dunlop 535Q wah, Korg DT-10 tuner, EBS MicroBass II preamp and DI pedal, Boss SYB-3 monophonic bass synth and two MXR EQ-pedals, along with some other stuff.

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

The Boss PS-3 (Pitch Shifter / Delay) is by far the coolest pedal I've ever tried for strange sounds . . . It does chorusing, it does delay, it does pitch shifting, it does some sort of weird arpeggiation with delayed pitchshifted sounds, it can even be used like a whammy pedal when you plug an expression pedal into it.

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

Do you mean funky as in Bootsy Collins or funky as in original and unique?

If it's the latter, I love the EHX Wiggler, it's a combo Vibrato, Tremolo, Uni-Vibey pedal, tube driven. Also, the POG is the best octave unit I've played. Finally, the Jetpack modded XP-1000 (combo of all the Digitech XP pedals, Whammy, Modulator, Space Station, Reverberator) makes some REALLY funky sounds. Actually, another cool one is the EHX Frequency Analyzer, it's the only ring mod that is actually useful to me.

Can you tell I really like EHX stuff? :D

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

Have an old Yamaha FL-100 flanger, but my old FL-301 can get really funky.
Used together with a wah....
Also have an old FL 305 that is even more funky...it just needs some minor repairs right now!

Re: Have a fave funky nondistortion/drive pedal ?

Personally, I don't think it gets much funkier than my 70's Mutron III envelope filter. If it's funky enough for Stevie Wonder's clavinet and Bootsy's bass, then it's more than funky enough for me.
