Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

i resently replaced the stock pups on my lespaul copy. i got a Jazz in the neck and i love the way it sounds. i went to the store and tought i picked up a 59b i wired it and everything, but just the other day i was storing my old pups in the SD cases, when i noticed that the 59 case said sh-1n. i don't know if i want to take the pick up out. when i play them in the middle position i get a great Skynyrd tone. i like the fact that the bridge is not so trebly, yet the highs come out nicely. its made my guitar sound warm yet crisp and clear. haven't gigged with it yet, so i don't know how it will cut through the mix. so far it's been a cool accident. if any of you have tried this let me know what you think or thought about the tone it gave you. good or bad.

Wouldn't a brighter neck pickup like a 59' be REALLY bright in the bridge???:eek13:

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

you would think so, but it's not. i don't like my guitars to sound bright or trebly. my guitar is pretty dark to begin with so, this just cleared my sound up. like i said it was an accident that so far i like.

According to a 1982 GP interview with Allan Holdsworth, he used the 59n in the bridge of his single pup custom charvel strats at the time. As I recall, he had Gibson pafs, had tried dimarzio pafs and he could hear a difference between the dimarzio and the gibson, but couldn't hear a difference between the duncan and the gibson paf.

One way to find out for sure what it is -- check it with the meter. The neck is about 7.3k, bridge 8.1k.

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

I don't think it is all that unusual. The originals were all over the map output/ D.C. resistance wise, so it is entirely possible that there were some lower output PAF's. Seymour recommends a Jazz neck in the bridge position of a Super Strat (combined with single coils.) Of course that is used with 250k pots. Do you know what kind of pots are in your Paul? Don't some of the current Epis and Gibby have 300k pots? It is possible that those could tame some of the highs.

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

I currently have a 59'(n) in the bridge of my Les Paul. It is wonderful, but a tad too dark at times. Outside of that, which I compensate for, I love it.

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

I just tried that the other day in my alder /maple neck strat and wow!! It was just mind blowing! The detail was really like those old paf's and NASTY. Snarled like the best Slash tone. I immediately ordered a bridge model and sold the neck but now i wonder if i should have kept it. I just didn't know what bucker could have gone in the neck with a '59n in the bridge...

APH, Jazz, Seth, Antiquity, PG. I've had the APH, Seth and PG all in the neck of my LP with the 59'(n) in the bridge. The APH was the best, followed by the Seth Lover.

Isnt slash from GNR playing tow 59's? If you wanna be cool, you cant go wrong with a slash-oid sound.

Jeff, how would an APH go in without overpowering it? Just lower it?

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

What diff do you think i'll hear with the bridge model? Gosh.... i cant get that tone out of my head now. Strange 'cause, while it was really clear and bright, as i played i would look down after awhile thinking i had switched to the neck and, nope. Still on the bridge! Just warm AND clear at the same time.

Yes. I do find that to balance according to what I want to hear, I have to have the 59"(n) in the bridge closer to the strings, and the APH farther away. I have also found that as a general rule, the APH need to be set low to get the sounds that I like, regardless of what's in the bridge. For a low output bucker, it sure is loud when you set it up close to the strings.

I was actually thinking; '59n in the bridge and a mini humbucker in the neck. Anyone try that?

<------Close... 59b, mini neck. REALLY sweet tone in the middle position. I imagine it'd be sweeter with a 59n, based on what you guys are saying. Oh, great, I WAS happy with it before I read this!!!:chairfall

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

With a bass/m/treble mix of 6/3/8, I'd think the 59 would give you some amount of twang but it might sound too scooped and sharp if you're not after that Nashville geek tone.

Re: Have any of you ever tried a 59n in the bridge?

A buddy just had me mount a 59n in the Bridge of his LP copy last week, and he´s fully satisfied... sounded quite balanced but still with agoor sparkle and growl.

As a side note, the 59n matches vintage single coils more or less perfectly output-wise, making it a good choice for those that want to keep their classic strat but want a slightly thicker tone from the bridge.
