I mean do these series and combinations really yield any useful sounds? Mostly use neck and Bridge Pearly Gates full or split now.

Not really, IMO. I have used one of his updated versions of that schematic just to see what would happen. I found for the most part I still only used the bridge hum or neck single positions.

It depends on who you ask.

I got smacked down just yesterday as being unimaginative and having no taste because I don't feel many alternate wiring schemes and jack of all trade pickups sound as good as the classics.

I do agree that you'll never know until you try. Tones I find unusable others find glorious.
