Re: Have you ever built a kit guitar?

That one looks silly good! I checked out Precision Guitar Kits and found a LP Special DC kit I'm considering. 359 dallahs + 40 for TOM fitting (+ shipping to Sweden, which I didn't check the price of).

Thank you, sir. It was a labor of love that's for sure.

If anyone wants to see more pics and details from start to finish, they are on my site: http://www.erikhansen.net/pgksgjr.php

Checking it now! Will probably give me some help with my build (if I decide to get the LP Special Jr DC kit).
I'll be sure to pester you with PM's too. :P
Tho if Gibson decide to make an affordable LP Special Jr DC the plans are off. :P

Re: Have you ever built a kit guitar?

I've got a '59 chambered LP kit on the way from Precision Guitar Kits ( thanks Erik for the awesome photos and pointers .... Definitely swayed my choice when it was time to bite the bullet ) It should be here in less than a week ! I haven't actually built a kit yet, but I've been doing as much research as I can , perusing the boards and reading reviews, for a couple of months. The prevailing opinion from those who have the experience and know-how is that it's better to spend the extra scratch right away for a quality kit, rather than buying a so-so all inclusive kit from ,ahem, overseas.
I even went to the hardwood store and got pieces of maple and mahogany to practice on, with sandpaper and tru-oil, as well as buying wood dye to get that technique figured out . Keda dye have a $10 package with the 5 primary colors, and they seem to work great on the test pieces, so there is no need to spend top dollar on pre-mixed stain. I've read the dire warnings that kit builds are far more expensive than people think they are going to be, but I've carefully priced mine and it will be less than a grand for a guitar worth far more that. I'll probably do a thread here like Erik did, since that SG turned out so good and it inspired me to get a kit .

Re: Have you ever built a kit guitar?

I've built 3 Warmoth guitars and 1 bass. Great quality and you get exactly what you want. Exotic woods, any pickup combination, necks just the way you what them.

I've learned a great deal about guitar setup. I can now cut my own nut, level and polish frets and put in all kinds of custom wiring. It's a great hobby.

Re: Have you ever built a kit guitar?

I just built my first "kit" - Warmoth baritone neck with a body purchased off of ebay from Saylor guitars. I really enjoyed all aspect of building it - lots of fret leveling and nut filing. A couple of quirks that I had; the neck holes did not line up with the holes on body (there were offset) so I had to do a bit of work on the neck to get it to sit properly, also I routed in a channel so I could adjust the truss rod without having to take off the neck. As I had mentioned the neck need a lot of work to get it playable - the nut was cut way to high and the frets were super unlevel (not sure if that is a word or not :0) ) .

Re: Have you ever built a kit guitar?

Can you guys post some links for these kits? I'm looking to build a strat within the next year. I have a pick guard already wired up and have most of the hardware for it. Thanks

I made two Strats but not really from a kit. I had a Fender and Anderson body, bought the necks, and other hardware then assembled them. I don't do fretwork or make a nut, that was done by my luthier buddy. A properly fit nut and good fretwork make a guitar play really well
