have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

just stockpile your fav amp so you can cannibalize it for parts etc later on? Have you ever owned 2 of the same amp? I see pros do that all the time.... I have been playing and listening to the same style of music forever: heavy downtuned rock. I think my amp is the end all be all amp, and I almost won my ebay auction for the orange thunderverb 50; my bid was $1050 and winning bid was $1075. Have you ever done this?

I see my tv50 on ebay for $1000 again so that is about what I am willing to pay for it and that is what the market is. I might change my mind though because I would not want it sitting in my car as a backup while I do a show and then it gets stolen so I would want a mag44 pedal as a backup instead of my marshall jcm900 which also serves as band practice amp and has a value of $400-500 used in reality, so between buying the $1000 tv50 and a magnum44 pedal am I really digging myself into a money pit?

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

Five years ago I got Traynor YCS100H and liked it so much that I eventually bought a second as a spare and/or stereo rig. They were a very good value, so that's why I could afford two of them. Having BTDT, I'm not into having two of the same thing anymore and unless I was to do some arena tour or something, would rather have two different amps and cover different ground. A stereo rig also sounds better with two different rigs because they can usually be dialed to complement each other and create a bigger/better sound than two of the same thing.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

With all due respect, this concept sounds silly to me. Why not buy a different amp to get two different tones or uses out of it? A backup is a backup - you might need it only once ever. Would it be that traumatic to have to have a slightly different sound for one gig?

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I want to snatch up old randalls and Marshall 800s and stash em at friends houses so I have an amp every where I go to play through. I'm seriously thinking of doing it.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I used to use a rack with an ADA MP-1, used it for 20 years. The company went belly-up in about 1996 so I started to hoard units as back-ups while I could find them for $100-$150. I still have 6 in various stages of repair. I think 3 still work, some have been robbed of a few parts, a couple have ADA Depot mods. I have a stash of spare jacks and foot switch buttons too! I don't use the rack anymore but after many years I dug one out the other day and it was the 80's again!

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I'd love to have two Tweakers... one with the stock 6V6 tubes, the other with whatever I prefer at the moment... a switcher and two nice cabs. BOOM!

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I could see myself doing this if i had just gotten a huge advance for a big tour.

Doesnt seem practical in my current situation.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

ya not so practical, glad yall helped me get my thinkinz' straight ;)

if anything I may get the tiny terror combo

I already am hoarding guitar and bass amps, gotta stock up for the guitarmageddon!! :)

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I would buy another Tremoverb if I didn't have any money or space constraints. I'd load one up with 6L6's and the other w/ EL34's.

Sure, why not? Not so much for parts but just for a "plug n play" replacements.

Slash brings along 16 guitars with him on tour: 2 of each one he plays, including his tobacco burst Les Paul and his 12 string. I would assume that he's got duplicate amps and duplicate rack gear as well. -Rod-

Depends on the size of the gig, huh? 150 people? no.

15,000 people? Yes. The fans want to hear the sound that brought them to the concert in the first place. -Rod-

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

Not exactly, but I do own three 50 watt master volume Marshalls (2104, 2553, DSL 50). They have different features and tones but can all be dialled to approximately the same place and are therefore interchangeable for gigging.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

In the early 1990s I owned 2 fender Super Reverbs (S/F, non-master volumes). I started using them both at gigs, stacked on top of one another. It was a great sounding rig.

As for taking two amps to gigs, with one as a backup ... I often used a combo and carriied a head. I'd always make sure the speakers could be disconnected from the chasis in the combo, and I'd replace the lead to the speakers with a longer one, so that if the combo amp died, the speaker lead would reach up to the head, which i would sit on top of the combo. It was a simple and relatively painless method of ensuring i'd always be good despite any amp issues that might arise.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I have 2 black face Bassman heads but i didnt buy them as a back up. I got the 2nd of cause a friend of mine offered me a killer deal on it and I figured I could flip it.

I own 3 JCM800's but thats a different scenario 2 are modified and 1 is stock I wouldnt call those backups either

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I gig with a Cornford Roadhouse combo. It's the best amp I've ever played through and I don't know what I'd do if it was irreparably damaged or stolen. The future of Cornford is in doubt as the company has had serious problems. There is one shop that still has a few amps the same as mine. If I had the cash I'd buy another one today.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I wondered what was up with Cornford. I was considering getting an MK50 about a year ago but there seemed to be very few dealers with any stock and no support available from the website.

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

i dont know if you can call my second CARVIN V3 a backup, i call it a pain in the a$$ to carry to my drummer's jam building, so i got the second V3 = i leave one at the drummer's place, & keep one @ home, i love the V3 's, the 1st one does not have the LED'S, the 2nd one does, it is really easy to see the channel i'm on by the color..

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

I'd love to snag up more Marshall JCM 900 MkIII's, heads and combos. Just don't have the funds or the space. I could make room for a 50W 1x12 combo (2501) but don't have the funds for it. I see nothing wrong with owning more than one of the same amp. If that's what works for you, why not?

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

Yup! Started out with a Lab Series L2 head that I use with my Randall 4-12.
Recently scored another L2 with the matching 1-15 cab for the same low price I bought the first head for!!!! ($150!!!) Now I'm in stereo heaven!!!

Re: have you ever gotten the SAME amp as you already own as a backup amp?

Yep. When the Ampeg V series amps were dirt cheap, I had three of them at one point. Two V-4's and one V-2. I alternated them to spread out the tube wear. Now I am back down to the one V-4 that has been in the family since new.

I also have two silver faced Princetons. One is a '68 Reverb, and the other is a '70's (or maybe '69) non-reverb model.

I'd also pick up another Jet II if it came along for a good price. I'd like to get the one with the three-band EQ and no tremolo, as opposed to the one with tremolo and a one-band E.Q., which I have.
