HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Looking to replace the stock pups with something hot that'll do 80s metal to current. Mahogany body, maple neckthrough, ebony fretboard and TOM-style bridge. Not especially picky with manufacturers, although something from either DiMarzio or SD is preferred :) Thanks!

I'm thinking a Custom 8.

How hard would it be to replace the magnet? I'm barely decent at soldering so I'm wondering if it'd present a challenge. :P

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Custom Custom or Custom 5. Got great Sabbath tones out of a mahogany neckthrough with those.

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Changing mags is pretty easy.:D

Loosen the screws that hold the coils in place, they are located under the plate (4 screws). The coils are suck to the base due to wax that has dried so you might need to tug the coils away from the plate. The coils and mag should start lifting. The mag might be stuck with the coils so push the mag away from the coils. After that happens check to see if there is a small wire in the way of the mag. Some pups have a small wire going by the mag. If you're clear, start pushing the mag and stop when it's half way out. When it half way out, get your new mag and put it next (side to side) to mag you're going to swap. If the sides retract, flip the mag the other way around. When you get both sides to stick together, mark both sides (that stuck) with a marker. Then get the mag you're swaping and put it on the other end of the mag that leaving. Push the mag out and fit the new one in place. Tighten the screws back and setup your pup. If by any chance you don't like the pup with the mag, repeat the process and put the old mag back in.

You can also search for threads on magnet swapping if you don't like (or understand) my instructions.

Custom looks about right on paper, if not I can swap the mag. Any clips of the custom though, overdriven and clean? And do the leads sound alright? This'd be going into a Laney AOR for reference.

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

+1 on Custom/59n. I'm pretty sure you'd install that and hear what you were hoping for.

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Custom/59n or, Custom/Pearly gates neck

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Distortion bridge/59 neck.......my personal favorite combo, not that that means much!

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Since you mentioned 80's in particular - Full Shred pickup. I'm in a Dio tribute band and the Full Shred nails it. We play lots of Sabbath too.

Re: HB recommendations, mahogany mockingbird

Duncan REALLY needs to throw these into their pre-packed sets. Call it the "Vintage/Modern" set. :33:

Yeah, it is about time they do that. In addition, they work so well together it is not even funny. I dont know If I have ever played a set that worked better together. :unitedsta
